I have replaced the previous text of this article with the OED definition. The mention of burning down the buccan wasn't referenced. The reference to "some American Indians" is too vague to be meaningful. The Levi-Strauss material is not directly related to the device.

As it stands, the article is not encyclopedic. If encyclopedic content can't be found, it should go to Wiktionary. -- Macrakis 07:49, 19 December 2005 (UTC) reply

Buccan / Bacon connection?

Is there any connection between the entymology of Bacon with the Buccan device? Since pork seems to be one of major meats smoked with a Buccan and bacon is usually a pork product. It sounds like there may be a connection.
