A quick note here - the enemies of the Romans in this battle were not Persians. They were Pontics - people of Mithridates' kingdom of Pontus.

The 'Persians' were the people of Iran, over a thousand miles away. The battle of Zela took place at a time when Anatolia was not under the control of either the Achaemenid Persians nor the later Sassanians.
