Conscription was an important factor in the defeat of the Liberal government, after 23 years of power, by Gough Whitlam's Labor Party in 1972. ^{[1] [2]}

I've removed that sentence. Not that it's untrue, but it doesn't relate specifically to Fairhall. It wasn't as if he'd been the prime mover of the decision to reintroduce conscription. He was the Minister for Defence, but it was a collective government decision that had more to do with Holt's "All the way with LBJ" thing.
