There is no official information divulging that Alanis Morrissette is Jewish, but there are clues that she may be of Jewish descent. She got her surname from her father, a French Canadian, but her mother was a Hungarian immigrant to Canada named Georgia Mary Ann Feuerstein. That's a Jewish surname, and certainly not a Hungarian one. And if her mother's Jewish, she is as well. The only other possibility is that Alanis's mom is a Hungarian of German descent, but if that's the case, why don't any sources say so? My hunch, especially since everyone I've ever heard of with the name Feuerstein has been Jewish, is that Alanis's mom was a Jew whose family wanted to keep a low profile due to anti-Semitism. But this is only a theory that so far remains unverified in any official source. Can anyone confirm this? Maybe, you, Alanis?? Barmispain ( talk) 10:49, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
- Original research. We'll leave her as simply Hungarian. Her German (NOT necessarily Jewish) name could be due to the fact that she is very distantly German on one line of her family. It could also be due to her Hungarian ancestors adopting the name due to being part of the Austro-Hungarian empire - happened. Oddly enough most Jews from Hungary not only consider themselves of Hungarian descent (probably true as people like Peter Lorre look more Magyar than Middle-Eastern; but that is just an irrelevant opinion) but they also had Hungarian names until they were forced to adopt them by Austrian who saw all Jews as Deutsche. They were not the only group in Hungary to change to German names, as many other Magyars who didn't follow Judaism did for political and economic reasons.
Sources state she is Hungarian and she speaks (and considers herself Hungarian). With that, we must consider a Magyar as not only will she descend from Magyar families (her family has seemingly long been Catholic) but that is what she considers herself. She might have ancestors that practiced Judaism but she is not a Jew nor is there any substantial evidence that she is Jewish (other than a flimsy case based on a name). In anycase, adding that she is Jewish is original research. - The Mummy — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.152.115.200 ( talk) 11:00, 1 November 2011 (UTC)
It says in the intro that jagged little pill is the best-selling debut album of all time. Please explain why - appetite for destruction has sold 38 million where jagged has sold 33 (wiki article claims). and appetite is an actual debut album, whereas jagged is alanis third album!? so the statement makes no bloody sense at all, does it? ;) 130.225.244.179 ( talk) 11:56, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
I understood it to be the best-selling debut album by a female performer. For a while it was the best selling album (full stop) of all time by a female artist. That title was then later claimed by Britney Spears. Also the reason it is considered a debut is because her career moved to an international level and she began using her full name, as opposed to simply "Alanis". Jadieb ( talk) 11:27, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
Part of the confusion I think comes from her earlier albums not being released internationally. You're right that it wasn't a debut album, I'll fix up the article. Mdwh ( talk) 13:19, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
(Yes, one could call it an "international debut", but it doesn't really make sense to compare an artist's first album, to a non-first album that just happened to be the released in a new country, and the whole thing would get rather complicated. And if we really use such a sloppy definition, can we really be sure that this is still the best-selling? Maybe there's another group with a non-first album that "debuted" in a particular area. It's simpler to stick with best selling first albums.) Mdwh ( talk) 13:22, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

I have an Alanis Morissette album that is not listed in the discography section. It is called "Spiritual Illusions (Compilation of rare and unreleased tracks)" released in 2002. The track listing is the following:
Sorry, I'm not going to update the Discography section because I'm not familiar with editing Wikipedia. But if anyone would like to do it, you can contact me at levidos [at] g/m/a/i/l [dot] com and I can email you the covers and demos from the cd.
This page's current content is extremely inappropriately written, and filled with non-NPOV content. Lyric snippet's don't belong on a page about Morissette, they belong on individual album pages. Additionally, the writer pre-supposes to know which lyrics correspond with which part of Morissette's life, something which would really need to be backed up with references to Morissette sayingso herself. In all it's just extremely not-encyclopedic. That being said, I'm on my way out the door, so if it hasn't been fixed by the time I get back, I'll do it myself. 66.157.29.22 05:43, 22 Jan 2004 (UTC)

I love Alanis and loathe Madonna, and yet I think this article understates Madonna's influence on the success of Alanis through her company, not influence musically, but in terms of giving her a chance to be a success. Without Madonna I doubt we would have even heard of Alanis. I have made additions to this article that have intimated the significance of Madonna but over time they seem to have been removed or diluted.
I think that Madonna herself had very little to do with it. The signing was with Glen Ballard (who was the producer of the first two albums as well). Although Maverick Records is Madonna's company, she wasn't really involved in the process of making the album. The influence and success should be attributed the Ballard himself then. Madonna, has been quoted as saying that Alanis "reminds her of herself when she was just starting out". She also had a joke (People Magazine Interview - I think) saying that Alanis uses a lot of "50cent" words in her lyrics. Besides those statements and Alanis saying she really looks up to Madonna (especially in her earlier career in Canada - not the similarities in their styles then), I don't believe she was really involved. What is the source for the Dave Coulier claim? In these parts it's not Dave Coulier but former Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Felix Potvin. This is more believable for a few reasons -- Potvin had a reputation for being a jackass, and he's closer to home (and I've heard more sources say it was Potvin). Anyway -- I can't provide a source for it for now so I say -- unless the Coulier connection can be independently confirmed, it should be struck. Rhombus 21:58 7 June 2024

Is thare a reference for this statement? I can't imagine that she would have gone onto a competition like that. At that point her career was doing pretty well. I reverted the addition to Category:Gay icons again. I'm opposed to having such a category for the same reason I'm opposed to having Category:Sex symbols - they're subjective categories that run contrary to NPOV. Changing the lyrics to "Ironic" doesn't make her a gay icon. It might make her a gay rights advocate and I wouldn't be opposed to that category being used if it exists. -- Jtalledo (talk) 01:16, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

According to my Billboard book of top 40 hits by Joel Whitburn, the chart data is entirely misquoted. I already deleted some of the entries before realizing it was too big of a mess to cleanup in the 5 minutes I have before bedtime.
I've read that Morissette knew none of the situations she sang about in "ironic" were ironic, and that's what's ironic about the song. 72.57.44.16 23:13, 23 October 2006 (UTC)Waterandsewerbill
Well, 203.26.122.12 ( talk · contribs) has chosen to revert me again, so here goes. I'd already split much of the discography info to Alanis Morissette discography because the article was getting long. I removed the excess number of fair use images (ones that are not under a free license) that were in a gallery because Wikipedia:Fair use criteria states, "The amount of copyrighted work used should be as little as possible ... Do not use multiple images or media clips if one will serve the purpose adequately.", and "The material must contribute significantly to the article (e.g. identify the subject of an article, or specifically illustrate relevant points or sections within the text) and must not serve a purely decorative purpose." It doesn't matter if other articles use the same format - the point is that they shouldn't. Also, the images had no fair use rationale on their description pages. Finally, excluding chart positions in Canada for Morissette's albums, when she is a Canadian musician, is extremely odd. Extraordinary Machine 17:09, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
I have removed all the trolling messages from this discussion. Acalamari 18:03, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Alanis Morissette currently has the distinction of having the second most number of categories of any article in Wikipedia following George H. W. Bush. The categories at the bottom of the page are a block of difficult-to-read links that are difficult to read or use.
One option I see is the consolidate the "Canadian X" and "American X" categories, such as Category:Canadian rock singers and Category:American rock singers. Since Morissette is now American by nationality and since the categories are for grouping people by nationality, I would suggest that all of her categories be switched to their American conterparts. Do other people object to this? If not, I will do so in a few days. Dr. Submillimeter 11:12, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
OK, I do not have consensus for these actions, so I will not touch the categories. However, the categories for this article are an inpenetrable mass of links in my web browsers. The categories need clean-up if they are going to be useful for navigation. Dr. Submillimeter 10:03, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
What is wrong with having so many?? Doesnt being on the top of the list attract more readers?? - TKELLY02
Whilst I do note the above discussion, the number of categories is ridiculous, particularly when many of them are duplicates. I have removed a bunch of categories, leaving 26. Ones removed are:
Duplicates:
Unnecessary/wrong
No such category
Personally, I am also tempted to remove the 'Canadian singer' / 'Canadian diarist' sort of categories as she's now an American citizen (thus revoking her Canadian citizenship), but retain "Hungarian Canadian", "Franco-Ottawan" etc as they refer to her heritage. I will leave that one to you guys. Categories are a useful tool in Wikipedia, but 49 (more than George Bush!) is crazy. Proto:: ► 10:37, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

While hosting the Juno Awards in April 2004, Morissette "exposed" herself on Canadian television by appearing on stage in a robe that simulated a naked body, and stating that Canadians "live in a land where we still think the human body is beautiful and we're not afraid of the female breahttp://en.wikipedia.org/skins-1.5/common/images/button_bold.pngst." Alanis' attitude toward the human race is one to commend. The rocker says she has so many homosexual pals that she wanted to pay tribute to them, and therefore she changed the line in hit song "Ironic" from "Meeting the man of my dreams, and then meeting his beautiful wife" to "Meeting the man of my dreams, and then meeting his beautiful husband". She is quoted as saying on website Contactmusic.com: "I have so many friends who are homosexual who I just adore. Anytime I can support the gay community in whatever way, I will." Morissette also shared a kiss with Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City.
She declared in regard to her music that the purpose is to make people react to it, to feel touched by it, to love or hate it, as she sees that as one of the goals of her art. The singer is well known for her quote "I want to walk through life instead of being dragged through it."

The comment about the "attack" on Morissette isn't very clear. What was the nature of the attack on the collaboration? I remember hearing things at the time alluding to Ballard's substantial contribution to th lyrics and that this made it less "real" (considering that the lyrics were full of female-angst). I'm sure that these rumors have been set straight as we're saying as fact that Alanis wrote "all" the lyrics, but perhaps we could clarify this thought--and perhaps back up the attribution of her writing all the lyrics and "much of the album's music" (the latter being somewhat debatable). Also, I took out the following phrase that was supposed to be another argument for why the "attack" was unfounded because it seems moot point: "and such a collaboration was not uncommon for many solo artists at the time." What kind of collaboration? Most artists have a collaborative producer; that's common knowledge and thus, isn't a valid argument. The bottom line is that this bit of info needs to be more specific. And I think it would be quite valuable for the article. Any help here would be greatly appreciated as I didn't have much luck finding details about this little controversy. The grammar and formatting of the first sentence could be improved. I propose:
Alanis Nadine Morissette (born in Ottawa, 1 June 1974) is a Canadian and naturalized American singer-songwriter, record producer, and occasional actress, who ranks among the top selling recording artists in history.
I think the terminology is sound. I just think "Canadian- with US citizenship-" (is incorrect, technically speaking) and sounds and looks absolutely bizarre. Thoughts? Justen 06:08, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
If you had read the article attached, to MSNBC. You would see that she is NOT naturalized; she has DUAL citizenship. Naturalized would mean she was no longer Canadian in almost anyway. As I travel around the internet I keep seeing references to Alanis Morissette as "Buddhist". Wikipedia has done the same, it seems, by putting her into "Canadian Buddhists" and "Converts to Buddhism" categories.
Has Alanis Morissette ever actually said she's Buddhist? I doubt it, I don't think she ascribes to any particular religion. I think inclusion into the above categories should be removed, right away.
The overall tone of the article is very biased in favor of Morrisette with such phrases as "Many fans love..." this and "Many fans enjoy.." that. These emotional statements need to be rephrased in a more neutral manner. The Wiki is supposed to be a information resource, not a marketing tool.

She plays the guitar, bass guitar, flute, harmonica and piano; all with a high level of proficiency. I think the word "musician" is more accurate. Jadieb ( talk) 11:57, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

I reverted the addition to Category:Gay icons again. I'm opposed to having such a category for the same reason I'm opposed to having Category:Sex symbols - they're subjective categories that run contrary to NPOV.

SO PLEASE make this correction —Preceding unsigned comment added by Neptune1993 ( talk • contribs) 14:18, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
On 1999, she co-headlined with Garbage on her Junkie Tour.

Does changing her performing name really erase those albums from existence? Its not like a band undergoing a lineup change and calling themselves something new ala Rage against the Machine + Chris Cornell = Audioslave, and we consider them a new entity. This is the same person. Max.inglis ( talk) 21:13, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
Is there a notable source which asserts that Alanis Morissette's music is/was significantly enough influenced by grunge to warrant the "post-grunge" genre label? The article doesn't really go over this influence, and perhaps it should if it is to label her work as such. I am by no means an exert on either this singer or the grunge genre, but I know enough about both to question the classification. A sourced elaboration would improve the article significantly. Without a source the classification might be classed as original research. 24.184.234.197 ( talk) 10:58, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
Who's deleting the sections; can't stand the truth? Especially facts about the Mr. Man dude she, herself admits to having dissed saying: "You search the credits for your name, and find it's not there." Maybe one should first discuss who Mr. Law is or what a "MR LAW" punch-out on a Naval Clearance Badge means that her father, himself may have possessed. Signed: one who knows, from the land of Rick James and the Catholic Archdiocese of Fresno. (Oh, don't delete please; its not top secret or anything, but I will have to inform Trutunich here in L.A. if you keep deleting). 64.183.42.48 ( talk) 02:46, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

because of copyright? I think, you can put better pictures of her. Böri ( talk) 13:24, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
The article says that Alanis is a guitarist (amongst other things). Is it not better to say she's a musician? She plays the guitar, bass guitar, flute, harmonica and piano; all with a high level of proficiency. I think the word "musician" is more accurate. Jadieb ( talk) 11:57, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

There is no source or citation for the "october 2011" album release. This is a fact that was just randomly added by someone and should be removed.

No album release noted for October of 2011. It was an announcement that Alanis is working on another Album as noted on her Website - Alanis.com, and her facebook http://www.facebook.com/alanismorissette. Please replace it back on the website. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.180.222.175 ( talk) 22:16, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
May I suggest that Ms. Morissette should be included in the category "Canadian expirate musicians residing in the United States" (----Sean McCaffrey) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Itchycoo84 ( talk • contribs) 07:47, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

Why would a cite be needed that she is Canadian? Is it not sure she was born is Ottawa? If not, I think the cite-needed-tag should be placed there instead. 85.217.36.71 ( talk) 20:05, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
You should put her beautiful pictures... NOT these pictures! Böri ( talk) 08:46, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
