This has long struck me as a weird way to open an article on a major computer scientist, with a reference to "hacker circles." With Hollywood's abduction of the term, it has taken on a different meaning and connotation in the public's mind than it held 40 years ago. Today in 2019 it only serves to distract from the real content in the article. Of the countless other major computer scientists, who else's article do we start off by listing their chosen username? No reason for an exception here.
