Read Levman again:"Social class is another example of the difference between the indigenous peoples and the incoming Aryans. The Buddha did not subscribe to the validity of the Aryan fourfold social class system (brāhmaṇa-khattiya-vessa-sudda) for it was not part of his ethnic heritage." Moreover the reference not only conflates the Shakyas as a "Ruling Family", even though it was a "Republic" , not a monarchy. Your reference(published in 2002) is simply inaccurate and wrong.Tags: Manual revertVisual editMobile editMobile web editAdvanced mobile edit

Shakya
The encyclopaedic reference provided in the previous edit confuses/conflates the Shakyans as a "ruling family" instead of a tribe/clan. Not to mention the rest of wiki article already states the Shakyas did not follow the Varna System. Read the references attributed to Gombrich and Levman.Tags: Manual revertRevertedVisual editMobile editMobile web editAdvanced mobile edit

The Shakyas did not follow the Vedic religion and hence did not subscribe to the Varna system. They were described as "riff raff and primitive" by actual members of the Vedic Caste System in the Ambattha Sutta as well. Therefore they could not be Kshatriyas.Tags: RevertedVisual editMobile editMobile web editAdvanced mobile edit

Maurya Empire
Inclusion of Sanskrit makes no historical sense. How can it be a literary language when the first time it was even attested was in 1st Century BC(refer the Wiki article for list of languages by attested dates), which is well after end of Mauryan Empire that used Prakrit and even Greek for its edicts but never Sanskrit ?Tags: RevertedVisual editMobile editMobile web editAdvanced mobile edit

"Colonial Era Writers" ? Using mythical stories to "construct" Buddhist history ? How nonsensical ! Seems like revisionism/POV pushing. And how does the recent date of a scripture invalidate it by default ? Also the Vedas, Puranas, Bible, Quran etc have many nonsensical passages too, be it talking animals, flying monkeys or Donkeys etc, but that does not delegitimize these scriptures from being used as references by historians for the corroboration of past religious/cultural/political events.Tags: Visual editMobile editMobile web editAdvanced mobile edit
