Shamkan Rural District ( Persian: دهستان شامكان) is in Shamkan District of Sheshtamad County, Razavi Khorasan province, Iran. [3] It is administered from the city of Shamkan. [4]
At the National Census of 2006, its population (as a part of the former Sheshtamad District of Sabzevar County) was 5,947 in 1,453 households. [5] There were 6,520 inhabitants in 1,863 households at the following census of 2011. [6] At the most recent census of 2016, the population of the rural district was 5,771 in 1,738 households. The most populous of its 20 villages was Shamkan (now a city), [7] with 1,882 people. [2]
In February 2019, the district was separated from the county to establish Sheshtamad County and divided into two districts, each with two rural districts. The city of Sheshtomad became the new county's capital. [3] The village of Shamkan was later elevated to the status of a city and became the capital of Shamkan District. [7]
