It is located in the southwest of the oblast. The area of the district is 2,280 square kilometers (880 sq mi). [2] Its administrative center is the rural locality (a selo) of Safakulevo. [1] Population: 13,120 ( 2010 Russian census); [3] 16,957 ( 2002 Census); [6] 19,627 ( 1989 Soviet census). [7] The population of Safakulevo accounts for 27.7% of the district's total population. [3]
