Miss Hungary is a national beauty contest in Hungary first held in 1929.

For some international pageants the Hungarian contestants are hand-picked, though. They are listed in the Hungarian contestants on international beauty pageants article.

History

  • 1929 - World War II Before the War more pageants were held under this name. The first was held in 1929 and the winner of it won the Miss Europe title. In 1936 Zsa Zsa Gabor won the title, but she was underaged so she couldn't compete in Miss Europe. Later she became a Hollywood actress and celebrity.
  • From the World War II till 1985 the pageant was not held because of political reasons: Hungary was a communist country.
  • 1985 The pageant was held again. More than 2,000 contestants vied for the crown, and it was won by a 16 year old girl, Csilla Molnár. In 1985 she competed in the unofficial Miss Europe pageant when in the preliminaries she was to win, but at the end she came as 2nd runner-up. In the summer of 1986 she committed suicide.
  • 1986- 1988 Because of Ms Molnar's death the pageant wasn't held.
  • 1989 This year was the first when Hungary competed in Miss World
  • 1989- 1995 The winner of this pageant was sent to the Miss World (except in 1993, when there wasn't Hungarian contestant). Since 1996 the winner of the Miss World Hungary pageant has been sent to this event,
  • 1996- 1997 the pageant wasn't held
  • since 1998 the event has been held again.

Belle of the Anna-Ball

This title is the most known one in Hungary, but this is not a national contest, because the winner of this title is chosen among the paying guests of the ball.
This is the only pageant that was held under the communist era.
The winner and the runner-ups on the other day make a tour in the host-city of the ball in chaise.
The ball is always held on a Saturday in July which is the nearest to the Anna-nameday

History

  • 1825, 26th July The first Anna-ball was held in Balatonfüred, a town near the Lake Balaton by Fulop Janos Szentgyorgyi-Horvath for her daughter Anna-Krisztina. In this event Anna first met his husband, Ernő Kiss who was among the Thirteen Martyrs of Arad in 1849 who were executed as the leaders of the revolution and war of independence against the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
  • In the 1800s .It was the most aristocratic ball, and was visited by many artists and politicians, too: Mihály Vörösmarty, Mór Jókai or Lujza Blaha.
  • After the World War I The ball lost its importance, but it was still held till the World War II
  • After the World War II Hungary became a communist country where aristocratic balls were unwanted events, but the Anna-ball was held again.
  • 1954, 31st July was the first ball after the War.
  • Since the 1950s the Belle of the Anna-ball title has been given to the most beautiful girl visiting the ball. The winner got a Victoria-style vase and the Apple of Eris, the 1st runner-up got a Rotschild-style vase and the 3rd runner-up got an Apponyi-style vase from the world-famous porcelain Manufacture of Herend.
