It is located in the south of the republic. The area of the district is 1,223.2 square kilometers (472.3 sq mi). [3] Its administrative center is the rural locality (a selo) of Malaya Purga. [2] Population: 33,058 ( 2010 Russian census); [4] 31,558 ( 2002 Census); [9] 30,849 ( 1989 Soviet census). [10] The population of Malaya Purga accounts for 23.3% of the district's total population. [4]
