It is located in the south of the republic. The area of the district is 1,277 square kilometers (493 sq mi). [2] Its administrative center is the rural locality (a selo) of Itum-Kale (Itum-Kali). [1] Population: 5,483 ( 2010 Russian census); [3] 6,083 ( 2002 Census). [6] The population of Itum-Kale accounts for 19.5% of the district's total population. [3]
