Medyan Dairieh (Arabic: مدين ديرية) is an award-winning British-Palestinian journalist, war correspondent, photojournalist, filmmaker, and film documentary producer. [1] Dairieh has been covering conflicts and political crises in various countries such as Iraq, Turkey, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Palestine, Lebanon, and Somalia. [2]

Dairieh has worked with different international news agencies, TV channels, newspapers, and news websites, including Al Jazeera Arabic and Vice News. [3] [4] He has produced several film documentaries from war-torn areas, but also from countries affected by famine [5] and refugee crisis. [6] He has also written documentary and investigative reports on human rights [7] [8] [9]; on internally displaced persons in various countries at war [10] [11] [12]; on asylum seekers and refugees [13] [14]; on arms production in Britain [15] [16]; on arms trade [17]; on conflicts and wars [18] [19]; and on Jihadism. [20] More recently he has also written books on various Jihadist groups. [21]

In 2011 Dairieh went to Libya to cover the military intervention in the country, where he spent time covering the rebels' fighting and their advance on Tripoli and the final defeat of Colonel Gaddafi’s forces. [22] In 2014 the journalist gained access to Benghazi during the intense fighting in the city between a coalition of militias and General Khalifa Haftar’s forces, and from there he went on filming the ongoing civil war in Tripoli and other areas in the country. [23]

In 2014 Dairieh visited Yemen and made a film highlighting the poverty, the political crisis, and the fabric tension in the country just before the latest conflict started. [24] In 2015 Dairieh gained access to the Yemeni city of Aden despite being under siege, and during that time he filmed the documentary “The Siege of Aden”. [25] After that, Dairieh went back to Yemen and continued covering the events in the war-ravaged country, including the dire humanitarian crisis stemming from the war. [26]

At the beginning of the 2011 uprising Dairieh went to Syria to cover the situation in the country, which he continued to visit in order to document the conflict over the following years. [27] [28] In Syria Dairieh interviewed and filmed foreign fighters who had joined the Syrian opposition on the ground, and made a film documentary on them. [29] Dairieh also met with the various groups fighting within the Syrian opposition, allowing them to express their motives for taking part in the conflict and their objectives, while also following them to the frontline and filming them in battle. [30] [31]

Dairieh meet the Al-Nusra Front in Syria and held interviews with senior leaders of the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra Front when the group had newly emerged. [32] Moreover, Dairieh spent several weeks in Syria covering the Al-Nusra Front's fighting, and made a documentary about the Al-Nusra Front entitled “Inside the Battle: Al Nusra-Al Qaeda in Syria”. [33] [34] [35]

Dairieh had also filmed the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in Iraq and encountered the group in Syria while filming “Embedded with Al-Qaeda in Syria: ISIS and al-Nusra”. [36] [37] [38] [39] As soon as ISIS announced the establishment of the caliphate, Dairieh gained access to Raqqa while also travelling around the Islamic State (IS) territory in Syria and up to the town of Al-Qa’im in Iraq, when the Sykes-Picot agreement had been declared void by the Islamic State. [40] Dairieh then produced a documentary about the Islamic State entitled “The Islamic State” [41], with the film being the first film documentary made from inside the Islamic State. [42] [43] [44] [45]

Dairieh's access and permission to film in the Islamic State have raised controversy, with accusations of “waiving the professional and ethical conditions of journalistic work” and even of "whitewashing the image” of ISIS being directed to him and Vice News following the release of "The Islamic State" film documentary. [46] Some journalists have questioned the editorial control of the filming and the limits of journalism in such circumstances [47], while also underlying the risk of promoting “the political interests of the Islamic State”. [48] Yet, according to journalist Damaris Colhoun, Dairieh's filming captures "nuances" of the Islamic State "that rarely surface in mainstream news outlets because they remain unknown, or do not fit the narrative". [49] Indeed, in many regions he covered, Dairieh was able to communicate directly with the subjects of his filming through his native Arabic, thus exchanging thorough and meaningful dialogues without fixers nor mediators. [50]

In the United Kingdom Dairieh has also covered anti-globalisation issues, environment and climate change, disarmament, including various campaigns and protests by Anarchist and Marxist groups. [51] [52] [53] Among his work, Dairieh has also compiled several reports and documentaries about detainees in the Guantanamo prison, and he has met the families of Guantanamo’s detainees from a number of countries. [54] In the past the journalist had also met senior leaders of the Taliban movement. [55] [56]

In May 2018 Dairieh visited southern Lebanon and filmed the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain Al Hilweh. In his documentary Dairieh highlights the marginalisation, destitution, and deprivation of the Palestinian refugees living in the camp, as well as the tension and lack of security caused by rival Palestinian factions and by some Jihadists residing there. [57]

Dairieh has also written the book series “From inside the Jihadist movements” on Fatah al-Islam and the Al-Qaeda organisation. The books are the result of his extensive investigations on the ground, in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Afghanistan, Somalia, Lebanon, as well as in other countries. The book “Syria: Al-Qaeda’s New Home - Biography of Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi" includes Dairieh’s biography of Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi, with the journalist exclusive information gathered from inside Al-Zarqawi’s close family and from a close circle of Al-Qaeda’s leaders. [58] [59] [60] In the same way Medyan claims that the book “Fatah Al-Islam: Origin and Destiny” includes an exclusive biography of Fatah Al-Islam’s leader, Shaker Al-Absi, with a precise reconstruction of the events surrounding his life and actions thanks to information disclosed by Al-Absi’s close family members and by other leaders within the organisation. [61] [62] [63] Both books include various documentation in addition to information on various high-ranking Al-Qaeda leaders.

Dairieh was injured a few times while carrying out his assignments, including while covering the fighting in Aleppo. [64] [65]Dairieh has received a number of awards including the Gold Award at the Hamburg International Festival of Photography [66], the Frontline Club Award for ‘Integrity, Courage, and Independent Spirit’ [67], and the Peabody Award.
