Dr. Jaime Claudio Villamil is a Puerto Rican medical doctor, television reporter, psychologist, professor, and writer who has published a book on the uses of medical cannabis, in addition to numerous newspaper columns in El Nuevo Día. He has a family practice in Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico. [1] Claudio Villamil is a professor AD-Honorem at Universidad de Puerto Rico. [2] He studied at the Georgia Institute of Technology and graduated cum laude at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is known internationally for his advocacy for the use of medical cannabis and for his work in Puerto Rico during the COVID-19 pandemic. [3]

Early life

Claudio Villamil was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, an area of San Juan, the son of José Antonio Claudio, who was an accountant, and of television actress Adela Villamil. He was raised near two cinemas, one named Cine Metro and the other one Cinema Paramount. As a kid, he was a fan of cinema and he used to attend those two places to watch movies, He also enjoyed roller skating.

He studied at the Georgia Institute of Technology and at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. [4]

Media career

Starting in 1983, Claudio Villamil became the medicine news reporter at WAPA-TV's Noticentro 4 daily television news show. He later also reported at Tele-Once. He still appears at WAPA-America's shows from time to time. [5]

Claudio Villamil is also a radio personality, and he collaborates on Puerto Rico's Radioisla. [6]

As of the early 2020s, Claudio Villamil was also a columnist, writing about medicine on the Puerto Rican newspaper, El Nuevo Dia. [7]

Claudio Villamil also has a channel on You Tube. [8]

In 2021, Claudio Villamil was recognized with the Rafael and Celestina Cordero award by the Puerto Rican Community Foundation. [9]

Cannabis advocacy

Claudio Villamil is an advocate of the medicinal use of marijuana, and he wrote a book on the subject, titled Cannabis Medicinal: Recomendando, Formulando, Dosificando, which was first published in 2019. [10] The book was re-released in 2022. [11] [12]

Claudio Villamil is also a member of the Doctor's Cannabis Medicine Certification Course Faculty in Puerto Rico, and he believes that most Puerto Rican doctors should be licensed to prescribe marijuana as a pain killer alternative, but has expressed concerns about the treatments patients would receive. [13]

COSACO

As a response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Claudio Villamil was one of a group of prominent persons to unite under an organization named "Coalision de Sabiduria Coronavirus" ("Coronavirus Knowledge Coalition") or "COSACO", as a way to fight the outbreak. [14]

Claudio Villamil was also a signer of a petition by a group named "Ciencia Puerto Rico" to San Juan mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz for her city to subscribe to the "Municipal System for Investigation of Cases and Tracking of Contact" (SMICRC) a nationwide system in Puerto Rico that investigates cases of the disease.
