The 2003 Indianapolis City–County Council elections took place on November 4, 2003. The election featured 78 candidates for 29 seats. [1] Before the elections Republicans held a one-seat majority, 15-14. Primaries for the council were held May 6, 2003. [2] Following the elections Democrats gained control of the council with a 15–14 majority. [3] Due to disputes over optical-scan voting machines and vote recounts for two seats, the final results were delayed for more than 29 days. [4]
This marked the first time in Indianapolis history that Democrats gained a majority of the council. In the Indianapolis mayoral election held at the same time, Democrat Bart Peterson defeated Republican Greg Jordan 63% to 37%. [3]
