Mukund Dewan is an Indian-American and Democratic Political Consultant and Director in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs of Cook County. [1] Dewan is most notable for his advocacy in areas of public education, immigrant rights [2], and his lobbying. He currently serves as the Field Director for candidate Mahnoor Ahmad in Illinois' 6th Congressional District. [3]
Dewan was born in Bartlett, IL but moved to Inverness at the age of 8. His parents moved here from New Delhi, India during the 1990's. Dewan attended William Fremd High School in Palatine and continues his education at DePaul University in Chicago pursuing a double major in political science and computer science.
Mukund Dewan started his career off as a grassroots activist at the high school he attended. From late 2021 into early 2023, Dewan worked to expose misconduct committed by teachers at his high school by speaking at monthly school board meetings [4] [5] [6] [7], reaching out to local media outlets, and collecting stories of other student's experiences facing misconduct. While making regular statements to bring forth misconduct, he also advocated for other issues such as urging the district to find money within the budget to facilitate the retention of extra social workers and psychologists whose salaries were, at the time, being funded through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund ( ESSER) funding [8]. Through this advocacy, Mukund went on to become involved in the 2023 Cook County Consolidated Election [9] working as a campaign manager for a democratic candidate.
In May of 2023, Dewan joined the Education Truth Project [1], A national SuperPAC aimed at helping elect Democratic pro-public education candidates into office, as the Director of Outreach and Communications where he both initiated the PAC's presence in Illinois and spearheaded projects in the Chicagoland area like working on the current discussion on how Chicago will transform its 7 person appointed school board into a 21 person elected board. Dewan is rumored to be working with Mayor Johnson on finding viable candidates, however this is has not been confirmed. Dewan was involved in efforts to lobby Mayor Johnson for $5,000,000 in funding for the Chicago Legal Protection Fund, which was related to other work Dewan was doing surrounding the ongoing migrant crisis alongside 11 different community based organizations such as The Resurrection Project and the Indo-American Center.
While maintaining this role, Dewan also works as the Field Director [1] for Democratic Congressional Candidate Mahnoor Ahmad who is running in the 6th Congressional District of Illinois [3] against Incumbent Sean Casten. Ahmad is Casten's challenger in the upcoming March 19th, 2024 Primary and differs on Casten - also a Democrat - on certain issues. Most notably, the ongoing Israel-Hamas war with Ahmad calling for an immediate ceasefire as opposed to Casten's more reserved take on the ongoing conflict.
