Chiasma, alternatively stylized as CHIASMA, serves as the yearly socio-cultural festival orchestrated by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneswar. Commencing in 2016 through the efforts of a student-led initiative, the event consistently takes place in the latter part of February or the early days of March annually. Its significance has steadily increased, establishing itself as a notable festival organized by a medical student group in the eastern region of India over the years. [1] [2]
Chiasma stands as an annual cultural and sports gathering arranged by students from AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Its inception dates back to 2016, guided by the then-Director Prof. Dr. AK Mahapatra. Initially conceived as an inter-college cultural, sports, literary, and fashion extravaganza, Chiasma primarily engaged participants from AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Notably, AIIMS Bhubaneswar was the first among the AIIMS Institutions, established in 2012, to initiate such a cultural festival. [3]
Throughout its development, Chiasma has transformed into a noteworthy medical college festival in East India. The milestone of Chiasma 2.0 in 2018 marked the inaugural involvement of students beyond AIIMS Bhubaneswar, with the event themed "Game of Thrones."" Eminent personalities like Armaan Malik, Azeem Banatwalla, and Simran Ahuja graced the event. [4] [5] [6] [7]
Subsequent editions, including Chiasma 3.0, continued this trend, offering a diverse array of events and attracting renowned artists. [8] [9] However, Chiasma 4.0 further expanded its offerings by introducing academic events, such as Mediquiz and Speed Dating. [10] [11] [12]
Chiasma experienced a hiatus amid the COVID-19 pandemic, during which an intra-college fest named Evince temporarily took its place. After a hiatus lasting more than two years, Chiasma 5.0 was conducted from March 9th to 14th, 2023, under the guidance of the current Director, Prof. Dr. Ashutosh Biswas. The festival continued its established tradition by attracting over 2,000 participants and spectators from colleges across India. Renowned performers such as Sunidhi Chauhan and Aakash Gupta graced the event, and new additions included e-football and Call of Duty competitions. Chiasma 5.0 also showcased the indigenous talent of Odisha, featuring performances like Gotipua and Sambalpuri dance, along with demonstrations of Khordha martial arts.
Chiasma hosts a diverse range of events. These events are a central part of the festival's attraction:
During the evenings at Chiasma, the spotlight is on Pro-Nights, where acclaimed comedians, artists, and musicians take the stage to entertain the audience. Past editions have seen performances by Aakash Gupta, Sorabh Pant, Sunidhi Chauhan, Ash King [13] and other notable personalities. [14] [15]
Chiasma includes academic challenges under the banner of "Wizarding of Wits." These events are crafted to assess participants' medical knowledge and understanding. "Synapse" encompasses clinical case presentations, while "Erudite" is a medical quiz competition that spans all 19 subjects in the MBBS course.
Named "Maho No Matsuri," the cultural program of Chiasma encompasses a diverse array of events showcasing talent from students across the country. "Adagio" serves as a music event featuring solo and duet performances, while the "Battle of Bands" is a competition that pits bands against each other. "Meraki" is the art-centric event, offering activities such as Face Painting, T-Shirt Painting, Pen Tattooing, and Clay Modelling. "Amaterasu" involves groups competing in dance performances, and "Nukkad Natak" revolves around dramatics and theatre. "Telestes" is a mime competition where teams convey powerful themes without dialogue. Finally, "Tepastella” is a fashion show where teams design costumes based on a given theme. "Mr. and Mrs. Chiasma" tests participants' personalities and ability to perform on the spot. [16]
Within the framework of "Incantare," Chiasma's literary events cater to both wordsmiths and avid readers. Events such as "Smartacus" (Entertainment quiz), "Inquest" (General quiz), "Disputandum" (Debate), "Kalopsia" (Open mic), "Trance Tale" (Creative writing), "Charades" (Talis Mauna), "Duplicia Enunciar" (Pressure cooker), and "Devil’s Advocate" engage participants in passionate debates and intellectual fervor. These events cover a spectrum of topics, ranging from societal issues to philosophical dilemmas.
Chiasma boasts a plethora of sporting events, both indoor and outdoor. Events like "Alley-Oop" (basketball), "Tiki Taka" (football), "Battledore" (badminton), "Chop Block" (table tennis), "Haikyuu" (volleyball), "AIIMS Open" (tennis), "Knight's Watchmen" (cricket) [17] and "Shatranj" (chess) see fierce competition from colleges across the region. In recent editions, the introduction of "Brute Force" brought a new dimension to the sporting lineup with a powerlifting competition featuring three distinct weight categories. These sports events play a crucial role in fostering camaraderie among athletes from various colleges in the eastern zone.
In its fifth edition, Chiasma introduced a range of gaming competitions, including the Fifa Tournament, Call of Duty: Mobile, e-Football, and Mortal Kombat. Additionally, the event featured photography workshops.
Chiasma provides a diverse array of informal events, such as Treasure Hunt and Speed Dating, offering attendees a wide range of experiences. Particularly noteworthy is the Salsa Workshop, which provides a unique opportunity to engage in the Latin dance form, Salsa. The festival also featured a performance of Khorda Martial Arts.
Chiasma is dedicated to supporting a range of social and civic causes, providing a platform to raise awareness and make a positive impact on society. Initiatives undertaken by the festival include orphanage donation drives, blood donation camps, and awareness programs focused on HPV vaccination, organ donation, HIV, and menstrual hygiene. The overarching goal of the festival is to contribute to the improvement of the social environment.
In the latest edition, Chiasma 5.0, the success of the event was made possible through the support of various sponsors. Notable contributors include Campus Events and Artist Management, serving as Festival and Talent Partners, Realme Music Studio, acting as the Official Pro-Nite Partner for the concert and Official Smartphone Partner, and the Indian Oil Corporation, holding the role of the Official Energy Partner. Diverse sectors were represented among other sponsors, such as health with Dr. Bhatia, Arthrex, and Mehers Diagnostic Point, and housing with D.N. Homes. Additionally, support came from beauty partner Lakmé Salon, beverage partner Coca Cola, sports partners Burma Sports and Sports Lawn, and official partners for specific sports like Pathsala for cricket and Odisha Football Club for football. Collectively, these sponsorships played a vital role in ensuring the smooth execution of various aspects of the festival, spanning event management, health services, beauty arrangements, and sports coordination.
Chiasma's success is also attributed to its media coverage and external publicity efforts. In addition to articles in 'Bhubaneswarbuzz' [18] [19] and 'Odisha Shines,' the festival used various social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube to promote its events. Significantly, Chiasma organized a flash mob performance and presented captivating sand art at prominent locations within Bhubaneswar.
