This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. So far most of the edits by the user can be considered as vandalism because all the person is doing is deleting Pashto/Pashtun related contents in different pages of wikipedia. ( Ketabtoon ( talk) 19:30, 25 July 2009 (UTC))

There's an error in the 22nd reference at the bottom of the article. Evan Thomas's article appeared in the OCTOBER 1 2001 issue of Newsweek, not the January 2001 issue as is stated in the reference. Can someone who knows how to make that edit please make that change?

Myself and ManicSpider have been working on the article Nasrullah Khan which we found while doing unsourced articles patrol, but neither of us have any prior knowledge of Afghanistan history or any real familiarity with the region, so we could use the help of any Afghan historians out there. The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 32,665 as of May 16. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. The article on former Afghan politician Halimzai has been tagged as an unreferenced BLP since December 2008, which is the current focus month of the BLP Rescue Project. I'm doing a little work on Category:Health in Afghanistan, and would like to propose forming Suicide in Afghanistan and Mental health in Afghanistan. On the first issue, there was a flood of coverage in mid-2010 of female self-immolation, but I'm not seeing much coverage other than that exact topic. Plus it's hard to screen out everything related to suicide bombing/attacks (outside the scope of my intended article). Further, there have been some studies by various governments on Afghan mental health after 30yrs of war, and I think it could be an extremely fertile topic, and arguably something that a few editors could push up to GA status relatively quickly. There's a whole collection of redlinked Afghan location articles waiting to be created. These can be started with AWB, and I'd like to go ahead and start doing that tomorrow, as long as there's no objection. There's a fairly good reference available - I've checked a couple against it to be sure, and they match, apart from a few minor discrepancies in transliteration. The bio of Afghan musician Naim Popal (created by a SPA) has been languishing as an unreferenced BLP since August 2009 and needs attention from an editor with knowledge of the field and the language. I've added one reference, which may not pass muster as a reliable source. There are also notability concerns. In this article, 2010 Salang Avalanches,there is a sentence that seems incomplete. Here is the sentence: Afghanistan generally expects about 400,000 people every year, according to experts at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs . What the author means here? That Afganistan expects 400,000 people every year to enter as tourists, to leave the country, to go skiing, to die of hunger or to die of avalanches? Hi, there have been a recent series of edits and edit requests, by IP and by Special:Contributions/AA193 concerning the sub-regional location of Afghanistan; claims are made that Afghanistan is in fact in the middle east, or in West Asia. I have started a discussion here Talk:Afghanistan#Afghanistan_in_the_Middle_East. I'd be interested in having User:AA193 and other editors contribute their thoughts, ideally backed up by references, as clearly there are conflicting views on whether Afghanistan is in central asia, south asia, west asia, the middle east, or all of the above. I hope a consensus can be formed, which would then be allowed to percolate through other articles. My own recommendation, which would hold for all disputes of this type (and not just Afghanistan), would be to use the UN geographic classifications; these have the advantage of having been agreed by the UN in general, which was not an easy process, and standardizing on these classifications may help avoid the sort of disputes that this question in particular brings up.-- KarlB ( talk) 16:06, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi, as far as I know, the Band-E-Amir Lakes are the only National Park in Afghanistan. The Ajar Valley was only discussed to become a NP many years ago, but there is no reliable information that the designation ever happened. Large parts of the region what is today called as Afghanistan was earlier Indian region of Gandhara. This is mentioned in prominently mentioned in Indian epic Mahabharata and other Indian texts. The capital of this kingdom was Takshashila which was an important center of learning for Hinduism and Buddhism among many other art forms. It is also written as Taxila after its Islamic conquest. Since the Vedic times, India's Gandhāri people among other Indian tribes inhabited this region. Gandhāri is also the name of the princess of who married the eldest blind Pandava prince as mentioned in Mahabharatha. The city was first laid to ruins in 5th century by the invading Huns and Turkic tribes and later by Islamic armies leading to annihilation and enslavement of Indian peoples. The mountain range Pāriyātra Parvata was nick named as Hindu Kush meaning 'Hindu killer' owing to deaths of large numbers of Indians while being transported to Muslim kingdoms of Central Asia after being taken as slaves.

The name Afghan appears first in the book Hudud al-'alam and appears prominently in Mughal texts of 16th century. The first Afghan kingdom was established in 1709 AD. The population that makes up Afghanistan today consists of Turkic tribes of central Asia - Tajiks, Uzbeks, Kazakhs and Pashtuns. Mongols moved eastwards in search of new conquests in India after sacking of Baghdad. The descendants of enslaved Indians and Mongol invaders still identify themselves as Pashtun and proudly carry the Mongol name "Khan" in their last name. They further went on to successfully conquer large parts of India and in recent times, have risen to prominent positions in Indian film industry.

Except for the fact that Tajiks and Pashtuns aren't Turkic people. Tajiks are basically Persians and Pashtuns are another sub-group of Iranian peoples. The only reason the word "Khan" is used is because of the fact that Mongolians, Timurids and Mughals influenced the culture of the region for centuries. Pashtuns are a whole different group of people. It is the Hazara's of Afghanistan who are the real descendants of Mongolians.

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. A reader sent an email to the OTRS system pointing out that the term "Afghani" does not mean the people of Afghanistan. The term for people should be "Afghan" or "Afghans". Afghani is a real word, but it refers to the currency.

Our article Afghan supports this, noting:

The term "Afghani" refers to the unit of Afghan currency. It is often improperly used for a person or thing related to Afghanistan.

I am not a member of this Wikiproject, and do not know how tasks are identified, prioritized or managed, but it would make sense to ensure that instances of incorrect usage are corrected.

I did a search for the term, and perused the first 500 entries. I haven't counted the complete number of instances, but this brief perusal convinced me that it is not a trivial task to address. That said, I encountered fewer errors than I might have guessed.

Some of the uses:

1. Part of a name, e.g. file:S. J. al-Afghani.jpg This seems like a proper use of the expression
2. Part of a file name e.g. File:Afghani dinner.jpg This appears to be an improper usage, but it strikes me as less serious than usage in text.
3. In reference to currency e.g. Afghan afghani No correction needed
4. Part of a redirect e.g. Afghani War One of the purposes of a redirect is to include plausible errors that may be used as search terms, so this should not be corrected
5. part of a scientific name e.g. Opostega afghani Unless this is a flat error, it appears the original naming may have been a less than ideal name, but we should not be correcting it.
6. part of text, used as a modifier. e.g. Ganjina states ...is the Afghani version... This is clearly not a reference to the currency, but it isn't strictly a reference to the people. I would want some clarification from experts whether this is improper or not.
7. part of text, used as a modifier. e.g. Visa policy of Afghanistan states ... travellers born in Afghanistan or born to Afghani parents... This seems wrong. I haven't yet corrected, so I could leave an example needing correction.

Do any of the project members have some thoughts on how this issue should be addressed? Given the large number of proper uses of the expression, it seems that an automated approach won't work.-- S Philbrick (Talk) 23:06, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

When I looked up “Afghanistan” on Google Maps, I found, in southern Afghanistan, a place labeled “Rudbar”. But all the articles listed under Rudbar (disambiguation) – including those listed under Rudbar Rural District (disambiguation) – are in Iran. There must be a mistake; either Wikipedia lacks an article on a place called Rudbar that’s in Afghanistan; or Google Maps got a place name wrong. Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

Maimay District and Nusay District appear to be the same place according to the maps in them. Is this a dupe or a map error? Ϣere SpielChequers 16:51, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

@ WereSpielChequers: Thanks for bringing this up! Looks like our maps are pretty out of date. In 2005, Darwaz district was divided up into Maimay District, Nusay District, and Shekay District. The map on all of the articles shows the old Darwaz district. I found a UN map here that shows the new district borders, but the names are different than ours. This article explains the difference (section 3.2): Maimay is also called Darwaz-e Bala, and Nusay is also called Darwaz. I'm not sure which names are correct, since the relevant Afghan government sites are down ( [3], [4]), but for what it's worth the Taliban uses our names ;). Tomorrow I'll see if I can make any progress towards a new map, this might help. -- Cerebellum ( talk) 03:31, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
