I've started this page in response to Talk:Iron Age in India#Title change, in the hope that in time we may create some guidelines on the question when to use India/Indian subcontinent/South Asia. Joshua Jonathan - Let's talk! 19:51, 30 June 2017 (UTC)
Maybe it's a matter of specifics: articles dedicated to the whole of South Asia, in which case "South Asia" can be used; and articles on specific periods in specific parts of South Asia, in which case specific contemporary names (Pakistan, India) or historial names can be used. See, for example, Gautama Buddha, which states that 'Buddha was born in the Shakya republic, present-day Nepal', and explains why we do not exclusively use the present-day name "Nepal." I also think that "South Asia" is more neutral than "India" or "Indian subcontinent." In the case of historical periods, either "South Asia" or historical names can be used.
I was expecting to see Deccan Plateau mentioned on this page. – Fayenatic London 23:01, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
