Un fortunetelly I can't see that page. I just am going to verify this sentence Ayatollah Khomeini affirmed in 1979 that the execution of homosexuals (as well as prostitutes and adulterers) was justified in a moral society as the amputation of the gangrenous flesh of the article which had been sourced by this book. I really appreciate you, It is an interesting point, why?! Saff V. ( talk) 05:53, 5 November 2019 (UTC) reply
@ Saff V.: It is odd indeed. The they are two different books in Google's database; when I check the bibliographic information at the bottom, I see that the version which lacks the information is an illustrated edition. It's interesting that the ISBNs listed in both version's publication info pages are the same, but Google reports different ones in its metadata at the bottom of the home page for each; I'd go with Google on this one, although I have no idea where they go their ISBNs from. Maybe directly from the publisher? I assume the duplication within the two books is an error, probably caused by copying that page from one edition to the next and then forgetting to change the ISBN along with the other info.
In any case do many make sure you update your citation, as we verified the info to page 90, not page 145. (Plus the year is different.) Compassionate727 ( T· C) 17:17, 5 November 2019 (UTC) reply

Henry Darcy, not Henri (onepetro journal, 1956)

For Henry Darcy, where I wish to add a sentence about his first name. A couple of places give the first name as the French spelling Henri: this contemporary memoir of his has "Henri" in the refs, and Britannica plus this article title in a hydrology journal have "Henri". According to that self-published source the requested ref (a biography of HD) contains a school photograph with the "Henry" spelling, which would clear it up.

I do not necessarily need the pdf, a confirmation of the photograph with "Henry" and a quote of the key passage in the article if the name is discussed would be enough.

Thanks, Tigraan Click here to contact me 09:56, 9 December 2019 (UTC) reply

@ Tigraan: On page 12 (the first page in the source) it states, "Henri Philibert Gaspard Darcy was born June 10, 1803, in the city of Dijon, chief town in the Department of Cote d'Or and former capital of the old Duchy of Burgundy". Seems to be the same person. A footnote on the same page states, "Darcy's given n am e : the French spelling is Henri; the Ang li-cized v e r sion is Henry . The Secretar y of t he City of D ijon has b een asked what his official birth record shows, but his reply has not been received. An early photograph (1821) carried the name .. Henry," a s does the title page of at least one of his books. His journal articles simply carry the name HM. Darcy," Al necrological articles and obituaries in French, as well as the Library of Congress catalogue. carry the name "DARCY (Henri-Philibert-Gaspard)." At this time we conclude that Darcy himself preferred and used the Anglicized spelling". b uidh e 15:58, 9 December 2019 (UTC) reply

@ Jo-Jo Eumerus: Requested via ILL. We'll see if my college actually is willing to import a map from Chile, though. Compassionate727 ( T· C) 18:47, 17 October 2019 (UTC) reply
@ Jo-Jo Eumerus: Ooh, received, and I'll wager it's more than you thought it was. The item "Hoja laguna del Maule: regiones del Maule y del bío bío" is actually the entire 64th issue of the Carta Geológica de Chile, almost 100 pages, accompanied by a map. Here's what I'll do: I'll scan and email you the table of contents, including the list of tables, figures, etc., and you can tell me what you are looking for. They also sent Nos. 60-61, "Hojas península de Taitao y Puerto Aisen: región Aisen del General Carlos Ibañez del Campo", and No. 62-63, "Hojas Taltal y Chañaral: regiones de Antofagasta y Atamaca", because all three (five?) issues are bundled into one fancily-packaged volume, so I'll send you the tables of contents for those as well, in case you want anything in those for any other articles.
Also, I will warn you that while I can try to scan and send you the maps (and I will, if you want them), the smallest one (the one for the issue you requested) is something like 2.5 feet by 2.5 feet, so I'm not sure how feasible that will be. Compassionate727 ( T· C) 16:04, 7 November 2019 (UTC) reply
To clarify the timeframe, I thought I would just go over to the library after writing the above and scan it, but the binding makes it impossible to open the front cover past perpendicular to the back cover, so that wasn't going to work. I then thought to take photographs of the pages and send those, but holding the book open made it difficult to then hold my phone far enough back to get a good capture of the entire page, so I'm going to need to find a creative way of holding the book open without my hands. Unfortunately, I'm too tired today to think of creative solutions. Hopefully, this will happen tomorrow. Compassionate727 ( T· C) 16:27, 7 November 2019 (UTC) reply

@ Jo-Jo Eumerus: I can always ask. FWIW, I don't think this actually came from Chile, even though WorldCat doesn't show any other holdings, so it's possible that the librarians may be able to find a more local source for whatever you're wanting. Compassionate727 ( T· C) 04:28, 10 November 2019 (UTC) reply
@ Compassionate727:OK, thanks. The article in question is this one ( archived version), for Nevado Sajama. I've been looking for that source for years. Jo-Jo Eumerus ( talk) 10:10, 10 November 2019 (UTC) reply
@ Jo-Jo Eumerus: That is a thesis for a licenciatura ( licentiate), a degree which in Bolivia seems roughly equivalent to a Master's; no wonder you haven't been able to find it. Quite apart from the fact that my library probably cannot obtain such an item, I rather doubt it meets RS requirements. (In particular, the fact that a "tutor" is listed along with the actual authors gives me pause.) Compassionate727 ( T· C) 15:52, 11 November 2019 (UTC) reply
@ Compassionate727:Huh. I've seen some other publications using it as a source ( example) but if it can't be accessed w/o actually going to that university it's probably pointless. Thanks anyway. Jo-Jo Eumerus ( talk) 17:27, 11 November 2019 (UTC) reply

@ Jo-Jo Eumerus: Well, requesting theses via ILL isn't particularly difficult at my institution, so I can try. But again, are you sure a master's thesis meets RS requirements? Compassionate727 ( T· C) 18:23, 18 November 2019 (UTC) reply

@ Compassionate727:Sometimes they do when they are frequently cited; that Sajama article is used by these four sources here for what it's worth, the first two of which are themselves somewhat widely cited (Bolivian volcanism is not a well researched subject). Jo-Jo Eumerus ( talk) 19:25, 18 November 2019 (UTC) reply

Thanks in advance. Jo-Jo Eumerus ( talk) 15:46, 19 November 2019 (UTC) reply
@ Jo-Jo Eumerus: Ack. Okay, there is a risk that the thesis won't arrive before my winter break starts due to the long shipping time from Bolivia, so my librarians and I have agreed to delay the request until after New Year's. It may or may not be waiting for me when I return on January 14. (All of that is said under the assumption that the University will loan the thesis, which I'm told they might not.) Australian date of birth

{{ resolved}} Does anyone have access to a reliable source for 19th-century Australian dates of birth? It is for Dora Ohlfsen-Bagge, whose birthname I believe was Adela Dora Ohlfsen-Bagge. The RS are giving different birthnames (a few say "Dorothea Adela Ohlfsen-Bagge") and different dates of birth, on or around 28 August 1869 in Ballarat, Victoria. Hoping someone can help to pin it down. Many thanks, SarahSV (talk) 19:47, 7 November 2019 (UTC) reply

@ SlimVirgin: I would say Trove (as I use that for Australian sources) but this gives me a whole bunch of conflicting info. Oof! -- MrLinkinPark333 ( talk) 20:25, 7 November 2019 (UTC) reply
MrLinkinPark333, the newspapers and scholarly sources are inconsistent. Even papers/books by people working for the same institution give different dates, so I'm hoping someone here may have a subscription to a reliable database. There's a Victoria government website for BMD, but they only give a year (1870, not 1869), and almost certainly spell her mother's name wrong (Harison, rather than Harrison). SarahSV (talk) 20:58, 7 November 2019 (UTC) reply
@ SlimVirgin: You've probably already seen these, but Art Gallery NSW gives her date of birth as 22 August 1869, while Oxford Art Online says she was born in 1870. I can send you the full Oxford Art article if you would like it. — Bruce1ee talk 22:04, 7 November 2019 (UTC) reply
Hi Bruce, thanks, I have the Oxford Art article, and I'm aware of the Art Gallery of NSW. They say 22 August 1869, but a book by someone working there says 28 August 1869, and the Victoria BMD site says 1870. There's similar confusion about her death date, but that was in Italy so I have no idea how to resolve that. For Australia, I was hoping someone might have access to a good database of BMD dates. SarahSV (talk) 01:20, 8 November 2019 (UTC) reply
SarahSV, The Age reported on August 25, 1869, that Mrs. C.H. Ohlfsen-Bagge gave birth to a daughter on August 22 at East-Street, Ballarst East. The name of the daughter was not given, so we can't be sure it was Dora, but this strongly suggests that if Dora was born in 1869, it was on August 22 of that year. If this brief clipping would be of use to you, send me an email and I'll reply with a PDF. John M Baker ( talk) 17:20, 10 December 2019 (UTC) reply
John, that clipping would be extremely helpful. Thank you for digging this up. I'll email you shortly. SarahSV (talk) 04:30, 11 December 2019 (UTC) reply
SarahSV, I was able to find a couple of additional clippings on a different database and sent them too. But they all say the same thing: Mrs. C.H. Ohlfsen-Bagge gave birth to a daughter, whose name is not given, on August 22, 1869. There apparently were seven daughters in this family, so you will only know that this was Dora if you can otherwise ascertain the year. John M Baker ( talk) 16:29, 11 December 2019 (UTC) reply
John, thanks again, much appreciated. That confirms the date. SarahSV (talk) 03:54, 12 December 2019 (UTC) reply

And there is another

1980s California Ballot Measure Voting Data

{{ stale}} I'm looking for detailed election data for California ballot measures going back to at least the 1980s. I'm specifically looking for a source to improve 1986 California Proposition 65, but the data I'm looking for could of course be used to improve any number of similar articles.

A Google search finds this archive from the California Secretary of State's office but that only goes back to 1990. I also found a UC Hastings database, which has pamphlets and other good resources on ballot measures but no detailed election data. And I checked over my local library's databases, as well as my alma mater's, and found nothing relevant.

Is anyone aware of a database that has detailed voting data for California ballot measures in the 1980s?

Thanks, Titan Andromeda 21:12, 15 September 2019 (UTC) reply

TitanAndromeda, well, if you do not even know whether such a database exists, the first place I would check for this data would be the government itself. Surely there's some state agency responsible for conducting these ballot measures. Have you tried dropping them an email? —  Pajz ( talk) 12:21, 19 October 2019 (UTC) reply

Since the decision is unpublished, it is uncertain whether it is available through a legal database -- personally, I cannot find it in Lexis/Westlaw (but the scope of access varies) and https://appellatecases.courtinfo.ca.gov/search.cfm?dist=6 does not give a case citation, so you may ultimately need to get in touch with the clerk's office of the 6th District Court of Appeal. —  Pajz ( talk) 16:00, 15 September 2019 (UTC) reply

@ Compassionate727:Oh. Well, the Puerto Aisen map definitively isn't necessary. Thanks for the effort. Jo-Jo Eumerus ( talk) 17:15, 7 November 2019 (UTC) reply

(All of that is said under the assumption that the University will loan the thesis, which I'm told they might not.) {{ resolved}} Does anyone have access to a reliable source for 19th-century Australian dates of birth?

@ KAVEBEAR: Sorry, I can't read this citation, and trying to Google search it didn't help me. What is this? Compassionate727 ( T· C) 18:01, 4 December 2019 (UTC) reply
Here's a BNF notice (BNF = Bibliothèque nationale de France). It says the book is accessible at its Paris location (BNF-Tolbiac). (I cannot go there myself.) Tigraan Click here to contact me 10:11, 9 December 2019 (UTC) reply
@ KAVEBEAR: Is what Tigraan linked the same thing? Because I can point you to various links with open access to what Tigraan linked, but I don't think it's the same. Compassionate727 ( T· C) 18:52, 9 December 2019 (UTC) reply
It is not the same edition, but the link says it is the same work. See Note(s) : Même ouvrage que : "Journal d'un voyage pittoresque autour du monde exécuté sur la corvette" La Coquille; même ouvrage que translates to "same work as". Considering the request I would assume the edition does not matter a whole lot. Tigraan Click here to contact me 11:27, 10 December 2019 (UTC) reply
@ Tigraan: Thanks for pointing that out. I agree that the difference is unimportant if the contents of the volumes are indeed identical. @ KAVEBEAR: The title that Tigraan linked is a two-volume set of books: volume 1 is available in full here, volume 2 is available in full here. Can you confirm that these two volumes contain everything you wanted? Compassionate727 ( T· C) 16:48, 10 December 2019 (UTC) reply
