Welcome to the tenth edition of the Bugle for 2017!
The regular article news section for this month features an unusually diverse range of new featured and A-class articles. For the first time in a long time, it also only has one editor responsible for more than one nomination—take a bow, HJ Mitchell! As is becoming quite common, though, every one of the FAs is part of a series of related articles, including British war memorials, the battles of Frederick the Great, RAAF area commands, nuclear weapons research, and the US Great Railroad Strike of 1877 (re. the last-mentioned series, congrats to Timothyjosephwood on his first featured article, Baltimore railroad strike of 1877!)
While on the subject of FAs, the project has recently passed the milestone of 1000 featured articles under the MilHist banner—thanks to all the content creators, copy editors, image checkers and reviewers over the years who have made this goal a reality! According to our calculations, it appears that the honour of being the 1000th FA most likely belongs to the above-mentioned Baltimore railroad strike of 1877—so congratulations again Timothyjosephwood! This achievement continues the project's long-standing track record as one of the most prolific sources of featured articles.
Our book reviews section includes assessments of two new books on the Australian Army by Hawkeye7 and Nick-D, as well as a large range of recent external reviews. TomStar81 returns to the op-ed page this month, providing an interesting overview of the Soviet seizure of power in Russia during October 1917. Tom has also provided his regular timeline of World War I, this month's article covering a series of battles in which the Allies became bogged down in France as well as the engagements which marked the beginning of the end of the war on the Palestine front.
In other news, the MilHist FA, A-class, GA and peer reviews for July–September have been tallied. Nikkimaria, Peacemaker67 and AustralianRupert headed the list, with 29, 26, and 24 reviews respectively. You can find the names of everyone who contributed here, and we thank them all for their efforts.
Lastly, elections for the XVI Coordinator Tranche concluded on 29 September. AustralianRupert was re-elected as Lead Coordinator. Twelve other Coordinators were also elected, including three editors new to the job: Biblioworm, Cinderella157, and Krishna Chaitanya Velaga. Congratulations to all the new tranche, and thank you to everyone who voted!

- The contest department has completed its 123rd round of competition in September. A total of 38 articles were submitted by nine editors. Kges1901 took out the competition with 65 points from 12 articles, while Parsecboy came second with 42 points from five articles. Kges has been awarded the Chevrons for his achievement, and Parsecboy has received the Writer's Barnstar. Auntieruth, AustralianRupert, Iazyges, Lord Ics, Peacemaker67, The ed17, and TeriEmbrey also contributed entries. Points will go towards the 2017 Military History Writers' Contest Cup, which will be decided at the end of the December contest. Please submit any articles you are working on for the next round of the competition now.
