Happy New Year, and welcome to the first Bugle for 2024!

Project member HJ Mitchell was elected a member of the Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee in December. Congratulations! He joins several other members of the project who have previously served on ArbCom.

In sadder news, project member Anthony Bradbury died on 1 January 2024. He joined Wikipedia in April 2006, and liked to be called Tony. He served as an administrator on English Wikipedia for 16 years. Anthony's areas of interest were naval and military history, Imperial and contemporary Rome, Ancient Egypt, pre‑Dreadnought battleships, Dreadnought battleships, and battlecruisers, military aircraft, National Socialist Germany, and medical science and practice.

Turning to this edition of the Bugle, the Military History WikiProject's lead coordinator Hawkeye7 has contributed an Op-ed providing an overview of the state of the wikiproject. This includes a really interesting overview of the most popular articles within our scope during 2023.

The regular article news section includes two new featured pictures and single new A-class article; most unusually, no articles under the project's banner were promoted to featured level last month. Turning to the book review section, we have three reviews by Hawkeye and the usual round up of some reviews posted on other websites.

The final round of the 2023 edition of MilHist's article improvement contest finished with Pickersgill-Cunliffe taking the victory and the WikiChevrons, with 43 points from 5 entries. Zawed was the runner-up with 40 points from 6 entries, earning the Writer's Barnstar. Catlemur, Djmaschek, Hog Farm and simongraham also submitted entries.

With the December results in, this concluded the 2023 competition and so, after a drum roll of an appropriate duration, the Military History Writers' Contest Cup went to Zawed, who scored a cumulative total of 508 points from 77 MilHist articles, including 2 taken to A status and 16 taken to GA status. Congratulations to Zawed and to the other 11 participants in the year's competition. The full results for all editors who submitted entries for the past year can be found here.

The 2024 contest has commenced so for a bit of friendly competition, consider submitting the articles you are currently working on. Remember – you too could win barnstars!
