The project coordinators are responsible for maintaining the procedural and administrative aspects of the project. They are the designated points of contact for procedural issues and are responsible for ensuring that the project as a whole is properly informed of them.

To provide some examples of coordinator duties: the coordinators manage the proposal and creation of new task forces; ensure that project announcement and task lists are kept up-to-date; initiate drafting of guidelines needed by the project; organize the category system; oversee the recruitment of new members, including the use of project notices and other advertising methods; create and maintain collaborative projects if any; maintain the project page and the various guidelines in it in a clean and easy-to-use state; monitor technical policies and ensure that project templates satisfy them; and assist in organizing and promoting any Backlog Elimination Drives.

They are also expected to generally assist project members with any questions or concerns.

The coordinator positions do not entail any executive power.

Positions

• Lead Coordinator (one open position): will have overall responsibility for procedural and administrative matters within the project.

• Assistant Coordinator (2–4 open positions): will assist the Lead Coordinator by focusing on specific areas within the project that require special attention. These areas will be selected based on need and interest among the coordinators.

Election process

• The election process will run for two weeks from June 16, 00:01 UTC until June 30, 23:59 UTC.
• Any member of the project may nominate themselves for either position by creating a new section under Nominations below and copying the sample form below. Nominees only interested in one position should indicate this when adding their names. Candidates need not make extensive statements if they do not wish to do so.
• The elections will be conducted using simple approval voting. Any member of the project may support a nominee for either position. If the nominee is running for both positions and you wish to support them for only one, please make a note to that effect as part of your vote.
• Both project members and interested outside parties are encouraged to ask questions of the nominees or to make general comments.

1. As lead co-coordinator do you plan on changing the current frequency of the GOCE newsletter, since the year end report there have been 2, April and June. Do you hope to change this so it goes back to what would appear to be mostly bi-monthly.

Thanks for the questions. I would like to see more frequent newsletters. Getting them out is not hard, it just takes one coordinator to take it on as a task that he or she takes responsibility for.

I have no evidence to support this hypothesis, but I suspect that newsletters remind editors to return to the drives and blitzes, which is a partial answer to your second question. I have recently updated the list of coordinator tasks and think that the coordinators should work to remind each other to check it at least once a month and stick to a schedule.

I am ambivalent about active recruitment of copy editors from the general WP population. This is going to sound elitist, but we don't want to attract average editors with an average grasp of grammar and usage to this project, just for the purpose of cranking through more articles in an average way. I would rather have ten or fifteen great copy editors than one hundred average ones. Corinne

I am pleased to nominate Corinne. She has been a Wikipedian since Sept. 2012 and a Guild member since December 2013. Her name is frequently seen at the Requests page, and she's also a regular participant in our Drives and Blitzes, so is familar with many Guild operations. Corinne often discusses specifics of copy-editing on her talk page; I've never seen her being rude or abrupt with other editors, and she maintains a mature, calm demeanour in discussions.    Thank you for asking, Jonesey95. I've just spent a few minutes looking at the list of coordinator tasks and at several linked pages such as the newsletters, talk pages, and blitz pages. I think I can handle most of those kinds of things, but I think I might need a little help when it comes to compiling statistics, if that is something I would have to do. (I could do it, but would need help getting started.) I think I would be good at replying to questions on the various talk pages, helping to decide when an article is not ready for a copy-edit by the Guild, moving discussions to talk pages, archiving requests that have been finished, setting up blitzes, etc. I'm not sure exactly how the coordinators divide the many tasks that need to be done, but I'd be happy to work with the lead coordinator and with any other assistant coordinators, and I'm happy to be assigned tasks by the lead coordinator.    Checkingfax Thank you for your questions. I'll try to answer them.

   What motivated me to join the Guild I started editing on WP in September 2012, and for about two years I just read articles that looked interesting, and as I read them, I copy-edited them. Then I began helping editors get articles in shape, such as Radiocarbon dating, Oil shale in Estonia, and Epacris impressa. All along I kept learning about formatting text, images, and references, WP style, MoS guidelines, etc. Sometimes I felt I was running out of things to do. Then I came across the Guild of Copy Editors and saw the requests page. That's when I started editing for the Guild. When I first started, I accepted requests for more than one article at a time (I like multi-tasking!) until Baffle gab1978 said I could only accept one at a time.

   Experiences and strengths I taught English as a Second Language (and English as a Foreign Language when I was overseas) for over 25 years. Part of my work was teaching writing, so I have spent uncountable hours reading papers and helping students learn how to express themselves. Rather than finding it tedious, I actually enjoy reading and copy-editing, or proofreading. I have no desire to write articles, but I like to help polish articles written by other editors. I notice that there are more and more articles being written by non-native speakers of English. Some articles are pretty good and just need a little work. Others show clear evidence of being written by a non-native speaker. In some of those, I can usually figure out what is intended and revise the sentences, a task which I enjoy. If I cannot figure out what the writer wants to say, I ask him or her: Do you mean this, or do you mean that? Or I just say that a particular sentence is unclear. Sometimes I suggest alternate versions of a sentence and let the writer select one. In others, the article is so poorly written that the Guild needs to ask the editor to work on it a little more before re-submitting a request. (I would say one of those was Ynglingatal where I tried but had to give up.) I know there should always be discussion among coordinators, but when this kind of thing needs to be said, it should said in a kind and respectful manner.

   Favorite moments I also enjoy helping improve the prose of articles written by native speakers of English. I have done a lot of reading over the years, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and essays, and material about writing. I think I've absorbed a lot about what makes for good writing. I particularly enjoy editing articles that are fairly well written to begin with, but the writer is open to minor changes and appreciates hearing concerns and questions. I have particularly enjoyed editing articles about West Virginia history (see Barnstars at the bottom of my user page for lists) and about science and nature. I can hardly believe that the science courses I took in college have really paid off.

   Why I would like to be an Assistant Coordinator Regarding the position of Assistant coordinator, I just want to help out more. I realize that other editors could get tired of the extra work if they've been doing it for a while. Before just recently, I didn't realize how much work was involved in keeping things going and up-to-date at the Guild of Copy Editors. The editors who do that work (like Jonesey95, Miniapolis, and Baffle gab1978) really ought to be commended for all they do besides copy-editing.

   Where the process could be improved The process seems to be working well. I regret that I sometimes give in to requests to copy-edit articles placed on my talk page by editors who don't want to wait their turn on the requests page. I guess I should put a notice on my talk page. Is there a template that GOCE editors can place on their user or talk page to decline direct requests by editors who have not placed a request at the requests page and steer them there, I wonder. I also notice more articles written on popular culture topics such as pop singers and anime. I wonder if we could keep an eye out for young editors who have an interest in these topics but are also good copy-editors, and invite them to join GOCE, so those articles don't languish on the requests page. I am committed to collaboration and always open to discussion. I look forward to working with both assistant and lead coordinators, doing whatever needs to be done, sharing the workload, and deferring to the leadership of the lead coordinator.  –  Corinne ( talk) 01:09, 16 June 2016 (UTC) reply

Since January 2013, Miniapolis ( talk · contribs) has served five terms as a GOCE Coordinator, including one term as Lead Coordinator. She's been a stalwart of the Guild, doing many of the tedious tasks such as updating Blitz and Drive statistics, patiently replying to queries on the Guild's talk pages, archiving requests, as well as being a reliable, competent copy-editor. I think her long, dedicated service to the Guild deserves recognition; I therefore propose to induct Miniapolis into the Guild of Copy Editors' Hall of Fame.
