Busy editors! 2pm

The International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) is hosting a Wikipedia and Wikidata editathon at ISMB/ ECCB 2017. ISCB is committed to furthering knowledge of computational biology to all. Wikipedia has been an important avenue for both scientists and the public alike to find out about our science. This editathon aims to bring Wikipedia to the bioinformaticians attending ISMB, in order to help improve the coverage of computational biology-related articles.

The editathon will follow a drop-in format. Throughout the day, the room will be open, with computers available, for conference attendees to come and contribute to Wikipedia articles in their field of expertise. To help attendees get familiar with Wikipedia and guide them through this process, there will be printed resources as well as experienced volunteers on hand. To ensure that attendees' minds are well fed, there will also be free snacks available!

Guides

Darren Logan (faculty member at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute) has assembled a short training course for new Wikipedia editors: User:Rockpocket/Training.

There is also a PLOS Computational Biology article describing 10 Simple Rules for Editing Wikipedia. [1]

Edited articles

There will be a record of edited articles at Edited articles: each edited article is eligible for points and prizes (see Scoring).

Getting started editing

Take a look at the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Computational_Biology/Popular_pages page for suggestions on where to start.

Volunteer signup / roster

The structure of the editathon is as a day-long drop-in, so that conference attendees can come and contribute as they find time. Our experience in the past is that attendees are pretty enthusiastic, but unfamiliar with Wikipedia. As such, we need experienced Wikipedians on hand to answer questions and guide volunteers. At minimum we need one volunteer present at any given time, but two to three would be ideal. If you are able to contribute, please sign up below. Here are the conference schedule and proceedings for reference.
