Wikipedia Report 12/18: India Controls Report

The second most populous country on Earth has more than 10% of its 1 billion people speaking English, so no wonder sometimes the Top 25 Report gets extremely Indian. Local blockbusters (#3, #14), marriages of local rich people (#10, #11, #13) and celebrities (#15, plus the American groom at #24), local important people (#7, #12)... and if you wanna get technical, there's a Parsi-descendant rock legend at #8, and a new Netflix release set in the Indian jungle at #22. Still, the list is topped by YouTube's "hall of dishonor", now led by the video service's own YouTube Spotlight channel as millions of people showed their disdain for the latest YouTube Rewind. Some superheroes are also present: DC Comics has a Aquaman movie (#5, portrayed by #2, married to #4) and a big event for their TV shows (#17), while Marvel gives an animated Spider-Man (#9) and teases fans with Avengers 4 (#21). History-based film (#16, #20) and Netflix (#18), rich people doing politics (#23) or seeking innovation (#25), UFC fighters (#19), and that obituary that just won't leave (#6) complete the list.

For the week of December 9 to 15, 2018, the 25 most popular articles on Wikipedia, as determined from the WP:5000 report were:

Rank Article Class Views Image About
1 List of most-disliked YouTube videos 2,098,077
YouTube Rewind 2018: Everyone Controls Rewind, the latest installment of the video service's yearly recap, was so underwhelming (too much Fortnite, not enough YouTubers people actually know) that it got showered with thumbs down and less than a week later, the 10 million dislikes (now 14) were enough for the "honor" of taking the top of this list from Justin Bieber (music videos are most of the list, including complaining about big names releasing annoying songs, YouTubers trying to be musicians, and dreadful stuff such as " Friday", Crazy Frog and The Gummy Bear Song). For curiosity's sake, the one with the biggest dislike percentage is a singer from my country doing a call to arms against the crazy man who was running for president, leading to backlash from "Bolsominions" who guaranteed Brazil will have a rough 2019.
2 Jason Momoa 1,946,897
If people stop making jokes about Aquaman being a ridiculous excuse for a superhero, you can probably thank his portrayer in the DC Cinematic Universe, who made him a drunk and boisterous barbarian, basically a G-rated Khal Drogo who breathes underwater and talks to fish. Momoa stars in the hero's solo movie (#5) which is already a critical and commercial hit.
3 2.0 (film) 1,088,225
2.0, a follow-up to 2010's Enthiran, featuring robots (such as the gynoid in the left, played by Amy Jackson), mad scientists and huge battles, is both the most expensive Indian movie ever (₹543 crore, or US$76 million) and the highest-grossing Indian production of the year with ₹800 crore ($100 million, an impressive quantity even on Hollywood), making it climb positions on our #14.
4 Lisa Bonet 961,550
The actress wife of #2, with whom he has two children. Commons doesn't have a picture of her, so here's Bonet's previous relationship and the result of it, Lenny Kravitz and their daughter Zoe.
5 Aquaman (film) 932,125
One week after debuting in China and making heaps of money, the DC Atlantean superhero played by #2 hit most international markets (though the United States are due this week), including mine, so I can attest it is easily as fun as Wonder Woman.
6 Deaths in 2018 719,897
"There's no earthly way of knowing
What was in your heart when it stopped going..."
7 Shaktikanta Das 662,729
It's been one of those weeks with a lot of Indian people. Mr. Das shows up for being named the new governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
8 Freddie Mercury 660,927
Rami Malek now has a Golden Globe nomination for playing the iconic Queen frontman, whose run in our list basically screams " Don't Stop Me Now!"
9 Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 634,766 Sony Pictures tries to makes up for unleashing Venom into the world with a Spider-Man animated film that decides to team the Webhead with all alternate versions of himself, including Spider-Gwen and Spider-Ham. Reviews were glowing and the film topped the U.S. box office, though the country of this writer only gets it next month.
10 Mukesh Ambani 618,373
Two Indian billionaires saw their children Isha Ambani (#13) and Anand Piramal get married this week, and spent $100 million in the festivities, which probably looked like something out of Crazy Rich Asians.
11 Ajay Piramal 607,174
12 Sachin Pilot 496,796
From Indian rich people to politics, this guy was elected Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan.
13 Isha Ambani 496,368
The now-deleted page for the daughter of #10 who was the bride in the big wedding of the week. Rich parents and in-laws (#11) led to a guest list that included Bollywood stars, Hillary Clinton and Beyoncé.
14 List of highest-grossing Indian films 460,712
Baahubali: The Beginning (star Prabhas is seen to the left in one of its press event) has now been supplanted by 2.0 (#3) as #6 overall in this list, as well as #2 in the Kollywood ranking behind sequel Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.
15 Priyanka Chopra 459,525
Before the exorbitant wedding of #13 in Mumbai, this Bollywood superstar married a Jonas Brother (#24) in a Rajasthan palace, because Indian celebrities need to show off!
16 Clint Eastwood 441,759
One of the biggest living legends of Hollywood still runs strong as he approaches 90, directing and starring in The Mule, adapting the true story of a WWII veteran who becomes a drug mule. Views might have also been inspired by the death of his ex-wife Sondra Locke (who narrowly missed the list at #26), with whom he had an acrimonious split in 1989.
17 "Elseworlds" (Arrowverse) 437,272
The annual The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl crossover featured heroes from other continuities, such as The Flash from the 1990s and Batwoman, played by Ruby Rose (pictured).
18 Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo 433,852
People keep on watching Diego Luna (pictured) as this drug dealer in Narcos: Mexico while also looking up his page to learn more on the Guadalajara Cartel and its leader.
19 UFC 231 425,341
Toronto's Scotiabank Arena (pictured) hosted the latest mixed martial arts event.
20 Mary, Queen of Scots 414,912
In a reminder that sometimes Scotland and Ireland are interchangeable for Americans, Mary, Queen of Scots has this monarch played by the very Irish Saoirse Ronan (pictured). Her first cousin once removed Elizabeth I is portrayed by an Australian, but that's a detail.
21 Avengers: Endgame 400,794
Originally titled Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2, the continuation of 2018's biggest hit had its first trailer released. Fans can hardly wait until April to learn how the Thanos massacre will be reverted (possibly even bringing back to life his adoptive daughter Gamora, who appears in the picture to the left) - possibly with the help of someone from a movie that comes out the previous month.
22 Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle 379,207
Warner Bros. spent a fortune in making an adaptation of The Jungle Book directed by and co-starring Andy Serkis, yet they gave up on releasing it in theaters and just sold the thing to Netflix, who put it up for streaming this week. Must be fearing that shortly after the Disney version, people wouldn't have as much interest in a darker take without Baloo singing " The Bare Necessities" (along with how the studio already didn't get enough profits from The Legend of Tarzan).
23 Donald Trump 373,827
Trump is winning some (a Texas judge approved a lawsuit to repeal Obamacare, Stormy Daniels was sentenced to pay him), losing some ( Chris Christie refused to join his cabinet, Ryan Zinke is leaving said cabinet, ex-lawyer Michael Cohen is going to prison), and as usual, blaming everything on the immigrants (the 2018 Strasbourg attack led him not to sent condolences, but say that's a good reason to build a wall on the border).
24 Nick Jonas 366,241
The youngest of the Jonas Brothers is now married to a former beauty pageant who's possibly even more famous than him, if the fact she's #15 on the list says anything.
25 Elon Musk 356,613
After quite the wild year, seems like 2018 will end well for Musk: he appeared on 60 Minutes, saw Tesla's stock raise 18%, and the Boring Test Tunnel is nearing completion.

Exclusions

  • This list excludes the Wikipedia main page, non-article pages (such as redlinks), and anomalous entries (such as DDoS attacks or likely automated views). Since mobile view data became available to the Report in October 2014, we exclude articles that have almost no mobile views (5–6% or less) or almost all mobile views (94–95% or more) because they are very likely to be automated views based on our experience and research of the issue. Please feel free to discuss any removal on the talk page if you wish.
  • Exo (band) and BTS (band): the Billboard Social 50 might accept the EXO-Ls and the BTS Army checking the pages of these K-pop groups many times daily for their rankings, but we won't condone this gaming of the system.
Note: If you came here from the Signpost article, please take any discussion of exclusions to this article's talk page.
