2	Manti Te'o		2,089,567		Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn't Exist tells the slightly bizarre story of this NFL linebacker who claimed his girlfriend had died of leukemia, only for researchers to discover she did not exist, causing a lot of confusion until it turned out he had been catfished and had kept up with the lie out of embarrassment.
3	Laal Singh Chaddha		1,697,937		This Bollywood remake of Forrest Gump has, unlike most of Aamir Khan's films, been a box-office flop.
4	Salman Rushdie		1,441,068		Rushdie continues his recovery after an attempt on his life. The suspect, Hadi Matar, has pleaded not guilty to attempted second-degree murder and second-degree assault. Iran (the country whose leader issued a fatwa for his assassination in 1989) has denied knowledge of the attack, though it was celebrated on state controlled media. Matar's mother, meanwhile, has denounced the attack, and states she never intends to speak to her son again.
5	Rakesh Jhunjhunwala		1,116,027		Splitting author and work is an Indian billionaire who died at 62 of multiple organ failure.
6	The Satanic Verses		959,433		The book which led to the fatwa on #4's life. The book is highly controversial, for numerous reasons, with Muslims claiming it to be sacrilegious and blasphemous. The result is that Rushdie spent the better part of a decade in hiding, with the book banned in several countries. The book's Japanese translator and Norwegian publisher were assassinated in 1991 and 1993 respectively.

8	Andrew Tate		918,043		The influencer/potential human trafficker was banned from some platforms after the media picked up he was a misogynist and Facebook and Instagram decided banning him would be good for PR. TikTok has taken some action, but have not blocked him, presumably because they decided the users they would drive away outweighed the users they would gain.
9	The Sandman (TV series)		905,666		A magician captures the Lord of Dreams (he was after Death, but that's not important). After (although it's an obvious plot development, spoiler alert) he escapes, he must re-build his kingdom, recapture his stolen artifacts, and bring a Nightmare under control.
10	Elvis Presley		870,060		It's been 45 years since the King of Rock n' Roll was found dead in Graceland. There's even a fairly good biopic in theaters to celebrate him.
11	Karthikeya 2		770,484		A Tollywood sequel following Nikhil Siddhartha as an adventuring doctor, now seeking the lost anklet of Lord Krishna.
12	Independence Day (India)		766,863		India celebrated a milestone in its history this week; the 75th anniversary of its independence from the British Empire. The predictable national celebrations unfolded, with many events and lots of flags and speeches, although some highlighted a more painful anniversary, that of the concurrent partition.
13	Liz Cheney		755,879		Wyoming Republican Liz Cheney (daughter of Dick) lost her Republican primary to pro- Trump candidate Harriet Hageman. She had drawn the ire of Trumpians for doing her job.
14	Casemiro		690,875		A Brazilian footballer that has been a mainstay of the national team since 2015 (and thus will probably play his second World Cup in November), Casemiro was acquired from the current European champion Real Madrid by Manchester United.
15	Sanna Marin		670,821		Finnish prime minister Sanna Marin was in the news after a controversy regarding some leaked videos of her partying. As a scandal it mainly seems to be about the way she conducted herself. Evidently some Finns hold their leaders to a higher standard than others do.
16	Woodstock '99		669,550		The third version of Woodstock had a very diversified line-up, ranging from Metallica, The Offspring and Korn to DMX, Jamiroquai and Sheryl Crow. And the last two songs performed, Red Hot Chili Peppers covering " Fire" and Megadeth playing " Peace Sells" ( "...but who's buying?"), were perfectly illustrative of how everything ended with an angry mob burning and looting whatever they saw, with only the arrival of the New York State Police interrupting the riot. Netflix has a miniseries documenting the festival gone wrong, Trainwreck: Woodstock '99. (watch the HBO Max documentary too, before the higher-ups decide to take it down!)
17	Darius Campbell Danesh		633,399		A Scottish musician better known by his first name who was found dead at the age of 41.
18	Better Call Saul		613,677		It was a dream all this time? After six seasons following a minor character from Breaking Bad the series comes to a satisfying conclusion. No word yet if Huell Babineaux will be getting his own series, but Vince Gilligan is reportedly already developing an original series based on new characters.
19	She-Hulk: Attorney at Law		599,967		The last Marvel Cinematic Universe series of the year, and Phase Four as a whole, shows Tatiana Maslany as lawyer Jennifer Walters, who after getting contaminated with the irradiated blood of cousin Bruce Banner also gains the ability to become a green rage monster. While audiences have only seen the opening episode which reveals how Walters becomes She-Hulk, critics have previewed the first four episodes and praise Maslany for her performance and assure viewers that it becomes a legal sitcom.
20	Raksha Bandhan (film)		537,471		An Indian romance film named for a Hindu rite.
21	Prey (2022 film)		497,830		The glorious return of two 1980s properties, one that was straight to streaming (the Predator in a 18th century hunt on Hulu), and another that keeps avoiding it ( Tom Cruise riding jet planes has been making so much money - 13th highest grossing worldwide, 6th domestically - that only on the 23rd it will arrive for home viewing).

23	Nábrók		468,435		Reddit found out about this creepy Icelandic myth regarding "necropants" made out of human skin.
24	Olivia Newton-John		463,887		Like #1, she died last week but people are still seeking her. Newton-John was probably better known between Grease and her musical career, but Heche's tragic death (a car crash followed by a week in intensive care) drew more attention.
25	Better Call Saul (season 6)		448,861		The final season of the Breaking Bad spin-off concluded on August 15, completing the transformation of the scam artist Jimmy McGill ( Bob Odenkirk) into Walter White and Jesse Pinkman's sleazy lawyer Saul Goodman. Several Breaking Bad actors, including Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, reprised their roles in this season, which received widespread acclaim—some even considering the series to have surpassed Breaking Bad as one of television's all-time finest programs.
