- 1940 – The first section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the United States' first inter-city expressway comparable to the German Autobahn, opened to traffic.
- 1949 – Chinese Communist Party leader Mao Zedong proclaimed the establishment of the People's Republic of China.
- 1961 – The southern portion of British Cameroons merged with Cameroun to form the Federal Republic of Cameroon.
- 1964 – Tōkaidō Shinkansen, the first Shinkansen line of high-speed railways in Japan, opened for service.
- 1991 – New Zealand's Resource Management Act came into effect, regulating access to natural and physical resources such as land, air and water, to ensure their sustainable use.
- 1991 – Croatian War of Independence: Yugoslav National Army forces invaded the area surrounding Dubrovnik, Croatia, beginning a seven-month siege of the city.
- 2009 – The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, which acquired the judicial functions of the House of Lords, began work.

- 1961 – Despite strong resistance from the U.S. Armed Forces, the Defense Intelligence Agency (seal pictured) was formed, becoming the country's main global military espionage organization.
- 1987 – Denmark became the first country to legalise civil unions between same-sex couples.
- 2005 – Terrorist suicide bombs exploded at two sites in Bali, Indonesia, killing twenty people and injuring over 120 others.
