  • Note by importing administrator:  On hold @ DannyS712: we don't have a mapping to betalabs, and even for XML upload imports, we need that. So there are a few options: (1) you could request a iw map add at meta:Talk:Interwiki map, or you could just create the file yourself. As you are the only editor of that page, there are no attribution issues that have to be maintained. Let me know how you would like to proceed. — xaosflux Talk 21:58, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
@ Xaosflux: I would like to preserve the history, so I am going to ask over on meta. Sorry, I thought you didn't need an iw map for XML uploads if you assign the edits to local users (in this case to me). -- DannyS712 ( talk) 22:00, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
@ DannyS712: We get to 'assign local' or assign foreign, but we still have to assign the import Interwiki prefix: - I could just say it is enwiki, although it isn't. — xaosflux Talk 22:47, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
@ Xaosflux: okay, lets do that? If it turns out that the beta cluster is added to the interwiki map, then I can always trouble someone to delete and reimport it if I care (but I don't really). Thanks, -- DannyS712 ( talk) 22:49, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
@ DannyS712: I'd rather not until that discussion is closed. For immediate work you can just create the page here, and then we can always import the history later. This request will stay open. — xaosflux Talk 22:52, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

@ DannyS712: FWIW if they close that as "no" I'll still import for you as if it were here. — xaosflux Talk 23:04, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
@ DannyS712 and Xaosflux: FWIW I do imports from non-interwiki-mapped wikis to here all the time (with my old database dump work). I just put the three-letter abbreviation of the month and then the year of the database dump in the prefix field and check the box about assigning edits to local users, but I do make sure they get to the correct usernames. If I were doing the import, I'd just put betawiki in the prefix field. Graham 87 01:09, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
@ Graham87: thanks for the note, since the interwiki discussion is open already, I'd like to see the result (especially as this is far from urgent). — xaosflux Talk 03:32, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

@ Xaosflux: thanks so much (and on a side note, was I correct that you are the only user that can import to a personal js page?) thanks, -- DannyS712 ( talk) 03:20, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
@ DannyS712: no, Graham87 can as well - there are a few processes that override interface admin edit restrictions, and xmlupload is one of them (more visibly: globalrename is as well - for moves of such pages). Had it not been for the xml export/import part (i.e. if this was sourced from a project on the transwiki source list) any admin could have transwiki-imported it to Wikipedia: space, then you could have moved it to your own user space and they could have deleted the redirect. — xaosflux Talk 03:32, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

@ Xaosflux: that is why I check the histories ahead of time to specify which revisions should be imported - so that the histories aren't intermingled. DannyS712 ( talk) 00:54, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
In general, is there a policy about whether or not translations should be imported, or if a talk page note is enough? DannyS712 ( talk) 00:55, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
@ DannyS712: policy not really (the closest would be components of the copyright terms of use) - the {{ translated}} talk page template is a good idea, even if doing a transwiki history merge. When using the transwiki import function there is no "only these" versions options either, so it is not like it is "easy". — xaosflux Talk 01:02, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
And when using things like WP:CXT, the histories don't come over at all - so it certainly isn't required. Some languages care a lot more about this (esp. German) so most of the RFPI's we get here are actually from dewiki users. — xaosflux Talk 01:03, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
@ Xaosflux: so are you doing all of these via upload? Sorry for the trouble DannyS712 ( talk) 01:06, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

@ Xaosflux and DannyS712: I'm generally meh about these ... a talk page template is good enough per the page at Wikipedia:Translation, but page imports can be done if you reeeeeeally want to. I prefer imports from old English Wikipedia databases or Meta, personaally. These are relatively easy to do using the upload interface by deleting the relevant parts of the XML ... but I'll cease doing them unless there's a compelling reason/preference for them over a normal talk page template. Graham 87 02:12, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
OK, so for the few that are out here, we can do them - but @ DannyS712: lets hold off on more without determining a bigger need for this specific use case? Maybe if there can be a rougher estimate on how many there would be? Certainly feel free to (a) make sure there is an interwiki language relationship if the topics still match and add {{ translated}} tags to the talk page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xaosflux ( talkcontribs) 14:08, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

@ Graham87: Well, I think that from the point of view of many people in German-language Wikipedia (where most importation requests come from, due to the views there on necessary attribution), page importation should be done as soon as a translation contains text from the original that is above the threshold of originality, and it seems to me that is the case here. So I fear that there might be original contributors who might frown upon no page importation being done, and even accuse me of violating the license. If you insist on not importing, I will at least put a note on the talk page that importation was requested, but denied, so I can wash my hands of the responsibility... But I see that it's a borderline case. I didn't translate a lot of the text and structured it a bit differently, that is true.

Also see the conflict of interest guideline on the English Wikipedia, in light of your German user page, which makes me far less inclined to help you, frankly. Graham 87 14:10, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

  • Note by importing administrator: Not done; @ Btvwiki:, we don't import untranslated articles straight into the main namespace. Either translate it first or let me import it in your userspace. However if you wrote it yourself there's no need for an import. Graham 87 02:55, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
@ Visuseditor:, @ JJMC89: Please import the article into the usernamespace of the GodeNehler to carry out the translation /info/en/?search=User:GodeNehler/Kulturpalast_(Dresden) — Preceding unsigned comment added by GodeNehler ( talkcontribs) 18:42, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

Import for non-WMF page to 0x88

  • Please import from https://www.chessprogramming.org/0x88
  • To 0x88
  • Note: Source is a non-wmf wiki that is licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0. Thanks, -- DannyS712 ( talk) 04:28, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
  • Note by importing administrator:  Not done @ DannyS712: the primary purpose of an import is to provide attribution of the users, in this case the users are not our users and we can't reference our history to an external site. Please document your source on that article's talk page. — xaosflux Talk 15:03, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

  • Note by importing administrator: @ Gestumblindi: Not done; I'm not comfortable doing the import for only a partial translation, especially considering the number of edits involved. I think attribution in the edit summary is fine here. Graham 87 06:08, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
On the other hand, I also added the "Expand German" template, and as soon as there is more translated from German Wikipedia, importation would be necessary anyway, I assume, so it could be done now? Gestumblindi ( talk) 12:32, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
@ Gestumblindi: I guess so ... if anything, the process to do the import is easier now than it will ever be. I've imported the edits. Graham 87 13:07, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

  • Note: Thank you! Whats the best way? I would allow you to import the German version into my userspace-- AMJoppien ( talk) —Preceding undated comment added 10:20, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
  • @ AMJoppien: Um ... I've just noticed that, from your username, you're the subject of the article herself, and you helped write your own article on the German Wikipedia. This is really not on in the English Wikipedia. Having said that, I've imported your article to Draft:Anett-Maud Joppien. You'll now have to use the articles for creation process to go any further with it, after you've done the translation. Also note that we have our own requirements for notability of academics; I'm not an expert in them however. Graham 87 18:27, 12 May 2020 (UTC)

@ Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt: Not done. I'm not comfortable importing 244 revisions into the userspace of an account that represents an organisation, which is technically not allowed on the English Wikipedia and represents a massive conflict of interest. I'd only be OK with importing the edits if the page was established in the article namespace first. Graham 87 15:11, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
@ Freitag-gruppe: Pinging you. Graham 87 16:05, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

  • Note by importing administrator:  Not done @ MarieWeg.: we would not use the import process for this. Good news: if you make 2 more edits of any kind, you will be able to move pages. You should re-review that page first, for example it has untranslated foreign categories on it that should be resolved first. If you want to request someone else to move the page for you though, you may post at Wikipedia:Requested moves. — xaosflux Talk 01:56, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
