Portal:Monty Python
Abandoned, static micro-portal on a narrow topic. Redundant to the head article Monty Python and its comprehensive navbox Template:Monty Python.
Created [1] in April 2008 by Zaui ( talk · contribs). The lead of WP:POG has said since late 2006 "Do not create a portal if you do not intend to assist in its regular maintenance", but that has not happened here. After creating the portal in April and May 2008, Zaui's only further edit to this poartal was to add a category in August 2009 [2]
Special:PrefixIndex/Portal:Monty Python appears to show a modestly useful set of sub-pages, but appearances are deceptive:
- Portal:Monty Python/Selected cast member has ten sub-pages, but the only one with any content is Portal:Monty Python/Selected cast member/1. The remainder — Portal:Monty Python/Selected cast member/2, /3, /4, /5, /6, /7, /8, /9 and /10 — are all blank, and have been since the pages were created in 2008.
- Portal:Monty Python/Selected skit has only one subpage: Portal:Monty Python/Selected skit/1.
- Portal:Monty Python/DYK has only one subpage: Portal:Monty Python/DYK/1, which contains only one item, added in 2013. . Per WP:DYK, "The DYK section showcases new or expanded articles that are selected through an informal review process. It is not a general trivia section" ... but this 6-year-old list loses the newness, so its only effect is as a trivia section, contrary to WP:TRIVIA.
- Portal:Monty Python/Selected quote does have 4 pages, each with an actual quote in them.
Per WP:PORTAL, "Portals serve as enhanced 'Main Pages' for specific broad subjects". But this apart from quotes which change if the page is purged, this is just a static page showing a preview of one cast member and one skit. The head article Monty Python and its comprehensive navbox Template:Monty Python do far more.
Two newish features of the Wikimedia software means that the article and navboxes offers all the functionality which portals like this set out to offer. Both features are available only to ordinary readers who are not logged in, but you can test them without logging out by right-clicking on a link, and the select "open in private window" (in Firefox) or "open in incognito window" (Chrome).
- mouseover: on any link, mouseover shows you the picture and the start of the lead. So the preview-selected page-function of portals is redundant: something almost as good is available automatically on any navbox or other set of links. Try it by right-clicking on this link to Template:Monty Python, open in a private/incognito tab, and mouseover any link.
- automatic imagery galleries: clicking on an image brings up an image gallery of all the images on that page. It's full-screen, so it's actually much better than a click-for-next image gallery on a portal. Try it by right-clicking on this link to the article Monty Python, open in a private/incognito tab, and click on any image to start the slideshow
Similar features have been available since 2015 to users of Wikipedia's Android app.
WP:POG requires that portals should be about "broad subject areas, which are likely to attract large numbers of interested readers and portal maintainers". Buth this has attracted no maintainers since 2008, and nor has it attarcted readers. In Jan–Feb 2019, the portal got an average of only 6 pageviews per day, which less than half the median for all portals of 15 views/day, and only 0.13% of the 4,464 daily views of the head article.
Maybe someday someone will build and maintain a Monty Python portal which actually adds value for readers. But the new technologies which make every link a preview means that the navbox does most of what a portal like thsi tres to do, so the bar for doing better is high. If someone does try that ambitious task, they will do better to start afresh, rather than building on these 11-year-old content forks. And in the meantime, it's not fair to lure readers to waste their time on this abandoned relic.
So I propose that this portal and its sub-pages be deleted per WP:TNT, without prejudice to recreating a curated portal in accordance with whatever criteria the community may have agreed at that time BrownHairedGirl (talk) • ( contribs) 05:49, 3 June 2019 (UTC)
- Delete - See Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Portal:Monty Python, at which it was kept because it had the potential to become a fine portal.
