We're excited to edit Wikipedia with the new LGBTQIA collections at City Tech Library! Join us in person on April 11th to learn about these great new materials at City Tech Library; to learn about editing Wikipedia; and to help increase representation of LGBTQIA individuals and issues online.
All attendees are subject to Wikimedia NYC's Code of Conduct and the Technical Code of Conduct.
Participation in this Pride event is made possible due to generous funding from the New York City Council Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual Caucus and the Office of the Mayor, and supported by The LaGuardia and Wagner Archives.
Interested in attending, but not a CUNY student or faculty? Please get in touch; we'll help you navigate City Tech building security. Email Jen: jennifer.hoyer18@citytech.cuny.edu
We'll kick this event off with a short talk by Anthony Amiewalan, whose books we're excited to have in our LGBTQIA collection.
Following that, we'll give a brief introduction to editing Wikipedia and an overview on how attendees can get started.
We'll spend time editing Wikipedia until 3:30pm; please feel free to drop in and edit any time between 12:30 and 3:30pm.
Afterwards, attendees are welcome to join us from 4 to 5pm for a reception celebrating the library's new LGBTQIA collection -- and celebrating all our hard work editing Wikipedia!
Anthony Amiewalan (Ami-wellan) is a first-generation Nigerian American, who was born in the South, grew up in the Midwest, and for a short time lived on the West Coast. He is now based in Bedstuy with his longtime partner. Anthony pulls from his Nigerian heritage, inspired by wood carvings, colorful geometric patterns, and clean, sharp lines to create his illustrations. He incorporates his experiences living throughout the country, traveling abroad, and interpersonal relationships to develop what he calls "a visual diary." Anthony's educational and professional pursuits have been in economic development, reinforced by his Master's Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from San Jose State University.
Although Anthony has never formally studied art, he has always loved painting and drawing as a form of self-reflection and mediation – and as an outlet for creative expression. Anthony has published three books. His most recent title is Eddie & Alan, a work of fiction. At its heart, this story seeks to shed light on the complexities of relationships between men, the fluidity of sexuality, and what happens when the lines are blurred. He is the author of Jojoba (Hah-hoh-bah), his coming-of-age story of coming to terms with his sexuality and redefining success for himself. Anthony is the illustrator of A Visual Diary, a book of illustrations filled with colorful images that reflect his personality and inner thoughts. He works full-time as a public servant for the City of New York City, as the Director of Buyer Services, to encourage and support the thoughtful inclusion of women and minority-owned businesses in all city-funded projects to ensure the City of New York's suppliers reflect the diversity of New York City.

While some of these subjects might not have enough material to create new articles, we could create new Wikidata items about them all! Curious about editing Wikidata? Feel free to ask for help
The Wiki Loves Pride Tasks page has a sampling of possible articles to create or improve, among other tasks to consider.
