Non-free use of this book cover in Carolyn Gold Heilbrun#Kate Fansler mystery novels is WP:DECORATIVE and doesn't meet WP:NFCC#8. A non-free book cover like this is generally OK to use in a stand-alone Wikipedia article about the book itself, but it's use in other articles typically reaquires that the cover art itself be the subject of sourced critical commentary per WP:NFC#CS and WP:NFC#cite_note-3. There's no such commentary in the article about the books author where the file is being use, and the reader doesn't need to see a non-free book cover to understand that the author also published books under a pseudonym. -- Marchjuly ( talk) 08:18, 19 July 2021 (UTC) reply

That was an early upload, from a time I was learning. It probably needs to be deleted, and I don't object. I would say, however, that images such as this help a reader to understand something of the nature of the author's works, which the article does not convey in words. The same would apply to the painter's works. Jacqke ( talk) 10:32, 19 July 2021 (UTC) reply
In the case of a visual artist, it might be possible to justify the use of a non-free example of their work if it represents their particular style or a particular technique, or the work is otherwise itself the subject of sourced critical commentary. So, if Heilbrun was known not only for the books she wrote but also because she was an artist who created her own book cover art, then perhaps an example of her work as an "artist" would be OK to use. That, however, doesn't seem to be the case and a non-free image of a book cover isn't really needed simply to just "show" that she was the author of this particular book. Now, it might be possible to justify the use of the cover in Robert Kennedy Abbett as an example of his work if he was known for creating book cover art, but there is already a different non-free file being used in that article for that purpose and it would be very hard to justify the non-free use of another per WP:NFCC#3a for essentially the same reason. If this book cover is something he's better known for and is something that is often cited as an example in reliable sources discussing his work, then perhaps this file could replace File:Chessmen Mars.jpg which is currently being used in the article. -- Marchjuly ( talk) 01:20, 20 July 2021 (UTC) reply

Derivative work Sreejith K ( talk) 14:46, 19 July 2021 (UTC) reply

  • Delete: Publically installed billboards can be eligible for copyright protection per c:COM:CB#Noticeboards and signs and c:COM:POSTER, which means that there are actually often two copyirghts that need to be taken into account with respect to photos of billboard: the copyright of the photo and the copyright of whatever imagery appears on the billboard itself. Since the file's description states the billboard is installed in the U.S., there is no automatic freedom of panorama granted for such installations (even publically installed ones) per c:COM:FOP United States. So, this probably does need to be treated as a WP:Derivative work which means that the persmission of not only the person who took the photo, but also the persmission of whomever designed the billboard is needed for this file to be kept. The file is currently being used as the top of Alexander Shunnarah (most likely for primary indentification purposes) and Shunnarah appears to be still living; this means that converting this to a non-free license for the billboard would be an acceptable option per WP:NFCC#1 ( WP:FREER) just to show what he looked like. There is some content in the article about Shunnarah being "well-known for the ubiquity of his billboards", but not quite sure whether that is enough to justify the non-free use of an image of this particular billboards for WP:NFCC#8 purposes. -- Marchjuly ( talk) 01:54, 20 July 2021 (UTC) reply

A static image is preferred to an animation per WP:IUP#ANIM, especially when the file in question is non-free content. Utilizing a single frame from the file would be sufficient to illustrate the gameplay ( WP:NFCC#3). – The Grid ( talk) 21:51, 23 June 2021 (UTC) reply

  • If a static frame can't depict the gameplay, it just makes more for the argument of why the media should be present. Wikipedia is not a game guide.

  • Keep -- this one is useful to depict the game's gameplay and its animation. Using a static image won't be enough because the game has a simple art style and readers won't be able to see the character, enemy and object movements. enjoyer -- talk 04:00, 24 June 2021 (UTC) reply
  • If a static frame can't depict the gameplay, it just makes more for the argument of why the media should be present. Wikipedia is not a game guide. Specifically: An article about a game should briefly summarize the story and the main actions the player performs in the game. Also, there's limited accessibility for anything more complex than a static image here, explicitly MOS:ANIMATION. – The Grid ( talk) 00:16, 25 June 2021 (UTC) reply
Having an animated gif is not a game guide. It's to illustrate gameplay, which are essential sections for all game articles. enjoyer -- talk 04:09, 8 July 2021 (UTC) reply

  • Keep WP:IUP#ANIM does not mention anything regarding non-free content. Maybe the animation should be converted to Ogg/Theora or paired down to 5s (to better meet MOS:ANIMATION standards), but not deleted or converted to a static image. -- Elephanthunter ( talk) 02:43, 21 July 2021 (UTC) reply
  • Keep Per others, but convert to video, as a GIF constantly playing in the background is distracting and inaccessible. ZXCVBNM ( TALK) 10:55, 22 July 2021 (UTC) reply
