Gnom ← Gnom2

I believe I once created this account and then forgot about it. I have the same account name on commons and in de-wp. I've been a WikiGnome in en-wp as an IP for quite some time now and would like to have an account since it's more convenient to edit while logged in. Thanks and cheers, Gnom2 11:53, 20 May 2007 (UTC) reply

Note:
  • The target username meets the requirements for usurpation.
Usurpation is usually reserved for established contributers and your account has very few editts. However, given your use of this name on other projects, a bureaucrat may be willing to perform the usurpation anyway. If you can provide details of the IP address you edit from so that its contribs can be reviewed, that would strengthen your case... WjB scribe 12:00, 20 May 2007 (UTC) reply
Exempli gratia: See my last edit. -- Gnom2 12:15, 20 May 2007 (UTC) reply
Unfortunately if your contributions are over a number of IPs that makes it a lot harder to review them. I note that you have been a user of de.wiki since January 2005 and have made over a thousand edits to that project. We'll see what the bureaucrats decide. Even if they don't think its appropriate to do it now you can always ask again after a few months of editing as Gnom2... WjB scribe 12:21, 20 May 2007 (UTC) reply

Till now I did all my edits in the english Wikipedia via my Austrian IP, so HERE I am not a "well-established" user. But as discussed in the talk, I am a quite well established user in the German Wiki (and somehow also in the French). Therefore I kindly ask for the requested usurpation, as Rfortner never did any edit since the account was created in January 2006. All Details are in the discussion mentioned above. Apanda's been editing quite solidly for over a month and created his account last September. He's made nearly 400 edits. I'm not comfortable with renaming users on the English language wikipedia to untypable (and in many cases undisplayable) usernames. I'm not doing any until SUL comes in, if it ever does. Usernames displaying as squares breaks things for many users, the only benefit is a minor one to the user account renamed. I don't see the balance to be beneficial to the project.  Clerk note: The account requesting the usurpation is very new (created for the purpose of making this request) and usurpation is generally reserved for established users. However, there is evidence that the editor has made substantial contribitions to Wikipedia under various IP addresses - for example it seems he made over 100 as User:81.179.123.35. Information about the other IPs would be useful but it seems to me likely the requester would make good use of the name (the reason for restricting usurpation to established users)... But how do we know this really is Bob? The usurpation template even says that objecting means logging in and making an edit. I'd say that all this does is possibly reset the 7-day window, since the account still has no edits and no confirmed owner. Wyv 15:30, 13 July 2007 (UTC) reply

That's a GFDL thing, right? Attribution and all that? I'm not sure if it applies in this case -- see the user's one edit, which was a simple grammatical fix that probably doesn't fall under copyright. Andre ( talk) 23:52, 12 July 2007 (UTC) reply
It's a policy thing. Usurpation was controversial and it took a lot of compromise to get consensus that it should happen. The agreement reached was that any edit whatsoever would prevent usurpation. A lot of the discussion can be found at Wikipedia talk:Usurpation and its archive. Some crats have been willing to perform these usurpations (few edits long ago, especially where there are no GFDL consequences) as an exercise of discretion, but they do not presently fall within the usurpation policy. WjB scribe 23:59, 12 July 2007 (UTC) reply

Clerk note. Although the target username has no edits, it made one edit (now deleted) to Milf on July 11, 2003. The page was later redirected to Mother I'd Like To Fuck and subsequently deleted as a broken redirect under CSD R1. The edit was to create a stub and appears to have been in good faith. Accounts with any edits whatsoever cannot be usurped under present policy, including deleted edits. This may need some discussion. WjB scribe 01:58, 20 July 2007 (UTC) reply

What is the reason for not being able to usurp accounts with deleted edits? If they're gone, they can't have any GFDL meaning. Andre ( talk) 02:07, 20 July 2007 (UTC) reply
The argument at the time the policy was being developed was they they would not be moved when the account was renamed and if undeleted would be attributed to the wrong person. Now that the rename function reattributes deleted edits as well [7] that problem no longer arises. WjB scribe 02:16, 20 July 2007 (UTC) reply
In that case, I'm announcing my intention to perform this usurpation when the time comes, and meanwhile we should modify the policy to allow this sort of thing. Andre ( talk) 02:20, 20 July 2007 (UTC) reply
Originally, deleted edits were a pain in the ass, as the archive table was not updated during renames. If that stopped being a problem, then I see no problem with the usurpation, because AFAIK the GFDL was the only impediment behind the reattribution of these edits. I'd make sure of this with a test account beforehand, though. Titoxd( ?!? - cool stuff) 02:33, 20 July 2007 (UTC) reply
Confirmed. Lets use the last rename as our example - it was done about an hour ago. User:Mindys12345 became User:Adam.J.W.C.. The deleted edits made prior to that rename are now attributed to User:Adam.J.W.C., not User:Mindys12345. WjB scribe 02:44, 20 July 2007 (UTC) reply

Jeremyb ← LinuxMigration

I have requested usurpation of this username once before: Wikipedia:Changing_username/Usurpations/Rejected/1#Jeremyb ← LinuxMigration. I believe that the typical minimum 7 day waiting period between notification and usurpation is unnecessary because the user was warned for my original request and did not respond.
I was planning on waiting longer to request usurpation again, but I received a notice on my talk page today threatening blocking/forced WP:CHU because my name does comply with the criteria at WP:UN and therefore submit this as a possible remedy and to avoid conflict over that issue. ( diff) -- Jeremyb 17:59, 30 July 2007 (UTC) reply

Also, FWIW, I am quoting my original request: Jeremy and Jeremyb (with capitalization variations) have become my primary nicks on several IRC networks/other wikis/etc. And updating it: In addition, I am using commons:user:jeremyb and plan to request the use of m:user:jeremyb (possibly through a usurpation request to prevent confusion with the existing m:user:jeremyB) -- Jeremyb 18:28, 30 July 2007 (UTC) reply

Note:

Usurpation is usually reserved for established contributers and your account has very few editts. However, given your use of this name on other projects, a bureaucrat may be willing to perform the usurpation anyway. If you can provide details of the IP address you edit from so that its contribs can be reviewed, that would strengthen your case... WjB scribe 12:00, 20 May 2007 (UTC) reply

Apanda's been editing quite solidly for over a month and created his account last September. He's made nearly 400 edits. I would have thought its fine - but it is a borderline case and the crat who reviews the request will have to whether in their discretion that's sufficiently established.

(edit conflict)  Done already. There wasn't any need for the template, really. We're not all about red tape. -- Deskana (talk) 18:27, 20 July 2007 (UTC) reply
Just for archival purposes, did the previous user of Picaroon email, or what? Andre ( talk) 18:28, 20 July 2007 (UTC) reply
He came over to my house for breakfast, I broached the subject of usurping his username, and, surprise, he had no objections! :-) Picaroon (Talk) 18:30, 20 July 2007 (UTC) reply

I'm taking off the template as it gives the wrong impression of the situation. For the record, the target account did have deleted edits, but those confirmed that it was indeed an alternative account of Picaroon9288 [6]. WjB scribe 18:31, 20 July 2007 (UTC) reply

I added the template just to be sure. Rlest 18:32, 20 July 2007 (UTC) reply

Clerk note: The target username made two spam edits in September 2004 as such it falls outside the community-agreed usurpation policy. A bureaucrat may be willing to make an exception given the edits were reverted and have no GFDL consequences. WjB scribe 19:14, 15 July 2007 (UTC) reply

  • Note to Crats - I'm going to be editing from a college campus come this fall and wanted to create an account for me to use on public computers without fear of my nice shiny admin buttons being turned to the Dark Side. I immediately thought of the username The Doctor and was dismayed to discover it had been taken. Seeing as how it's not in use and never has been, I was hoping nobody would mind if I grabbed it.

Clerk note: - As LinuxMigration stated, he had a request rejected back in May because usurption is reserved for established users. At this point in time, LinuxMigration still has fewer than 75 edits, although he now has a significant length of time on the project, so it is within the 'crats discretion.
