The guy with glasses

Ol' boy on the far left has glasses; no one else does. ♣ Klptyzm Chat wit' me § Contributions18:41, 10 April 2007 (UTC) reply

Or...

Could be Jet Li; he doesn't have hair in that picture, while the rest have. ♣ Klptyzm Chat wit' me § Contributions18:49, 10 April 2007 (UTC) reply

The Chinese ?

Who are they?

It might help to identify the people. The one on the left is author Alan Bennett from the cover of his Untold Stories, and the third is actor Jet Li in Fearless. I can't identify the second (a musician?) or the last. -- ALoan (Talk) 11:13, 11 April 2007 (UTC) reply

Well, thanks to Hoof Hearted for identifying the cover of Frank Zappa's album You Are What You Is and a random Gruftie (as I understand they are called) from Goth subculture.

Perhaps the last one is the odd one out, because it is the only one at Commons? Because it is the only one where we don't have the name of the person depicted? Because, unlike the other three, it is not used in the article about the person depicted?

If these are wrong, perhaps we are meant to be concentrating on the subject of the image, rather than the image itself? -- ALoan (Talk) 16:12, 11 April 2007 (UTC) reply

It's the subjects of the images that are important. -- Spondoolicks 16:20, 11 April 2007 (UTC) reply

Going for partial points

My guess is that the first three depict copyrighted works of art. While the last could be considered a work of art, it's not a published book/record/film like the others are. Hoof Hearted 14:36, 11 April 2007 (UTC) reply

You've got all the right people but not the right reason. Or at least not the reason I've got in my head and that's all that counts. -- Spondoolicks 14:45, 11 April 2007 (UTC) reply
Specifically, is it the copyright tag that is on the first three images? The last is the only one tagged with a free license. Am I barking up the right tree? Hoof Hearted 15:03, 11 April 2007 (UTC) reply
Wrong tree I'm afraid. -- Spondoolicks 15:08, 11 April 2007 (UTC) reply

the frank zappa cover is the only one with a person having facial hair... i know its obvious and stupid, but ya wanted a go anyway... now to some serious research... BratX 18:54, 15 April 2007 (UTC) reply

I know the 3rd guy. God!!

First hint

It would probably help to identify the two new ones. The second looks familiar but I can't pin a name on him. -- ALoan (Talk) 15:32, 19 April 2007 (UTC) reply

To be honest, I'd be surprised if the second guy was familiar to you - I'd never heard of him anyway - but he was the only person I could find who fit the criteria. -- Spondoolicks 11:51, 20 April 2007 (UTC) reply

Is this the guy you mean?

I have an idea of what the answer might be, but not exactly. And I don't know who the new people are either. Zoicon5 21:46, 20 April 2007 (UTC) reply

He was my first thought, but there are quite a few people in Category:Russian billionaires. -- ALoan (Talk) 10:14, 22 April 2007 (UTC) reply
I'm not telling just yet. There's still 48 hours to go with this round so I'll wait a while to see if Zoicon5's idea blossoms into an answer. If not, I'll give another hint sometime tomorrow. I will say, though, that the extra two pictures will probably only help to confirm an idea. Certainly the second guy might only be findable if you know what sort of thing you're looking for. -- Spondoolicks 12:20, 22 April 2007 (UTC) reply

OMG

First four: Alan Bennett; Frank Zappa; a Goth; but not Jet Li. So what do the Alans and the Franks and the Goths have in common?

And a more pertinent odd person out would be Roman Abramovich? So is the common factor that they are enemies of the Roman Empire? See Category:Ancient Roman enemies. For Jet Li, perhaps you were thinking of the Jets, the enemies of the Sharks in West Side Story? Or perhaps not :)

People like Luigi Alamanni or Niccolò Alamanni ( Alamanni) or August Gaul ( Gauls) would also fit, perhaps. But the last two still stump me? Vandal something? Hun something? -- ALoan (Talk) 12:15, 23 April 2007 (UTC) reply

Last one is Joe Escalante member of the Vandals, so Alans, Franks, Goths, Huns and Vandals were Roman enemies ( Category:Ancient Roman enemies) Smooth O 13:16, 23 April 2007 (UTC) reply
Correct, correct and correct. The long and violent event which they all took part in is detailed in Barbarian invasions (okay it's a redirect but it sounds more dramatic than Migration Period). 5 points to ALoan and 1 point to Hoof Hearted for getting some of the pictures.
Aloan also got the Cambodian Secretary of State for Defense (perhaps a little obscure but I did leave a little bit of his name in the picture to help) and I like the suggestion of the Jets, who would certainly have been too busy perfecting their intricate choreography to give the Roman legions much trouble, so how about another 1 bonus point to ALoan - not that you need it of course! 0.5 points to Smooth O for correctly identifying the punk, lawyer, Old Norse scholar, broadcaster and amateur matador, Joe Escalante. -- Spondoolicks 13:28, 23 April 2007 (UTC) reply
