This course is about popular culture in sixteenth and seventeenth century England. Popular culture is defined for our purposes as the features of culture and experiences of non-elites. How was life experienced for most people--the people we don’t necessarily know by name? To get at this we will focus on primary text readings about crime, cons, religion, festivals; the features of daily life, We will also read secondary sources to help contextualize our readings. Our main purpose is to enhance our understanding of the historical past through the experiences and reactions of everyday folks to their own times.
