The overwhelming majority of Africans enslaved in the Americas lived in the region now known as Latin America. Spain and Portugal established the first colonial societies in the Americas that enslaved Africans, and those societies were among the last in the hemisphere to abolish slavery (Cuba in 1886, Brazil in 1888). This course will examine the people and institutions that both built and challenged slavery. Drawing on recent historical scholarship, students will edit Wikipedia to enhance its coverage of slavery in Latin America.
