This course explores the history of California art through the Langson IMCA exhibition Dissolve at the University Art Gallery. Students will learn about art movements unique to the state from California Impressionism, Light and Space, and environmental art. The course examines how California artists address the dissolution of the environment, cultural identity, light, and interpersonal personal relationships in their work.
Contributing to Wikipedia is a unique experience for students to truly make a difference. In doing so, you will gain critical digital literacy skills all while providing the world with access to reliable information! In short, it gives you the chance to have an impact beyond the classroom. In lieu of or in addition to a traditional writing assignment, you will contribute to Wikipedia in this course through researching and adding to existing Wikipedia articles related to the art and artists in this course, or by submitting an original article to Wikipedia that does not yet exist
Welcome to your Wikipedia assignment's course timeline. This page guides you through the steps you'll need to complete for your Wikipedia assignment, with links to training modules and exercises, and your classmates' work spaces.
In addition to your professor and librarian, this course has been assigned a Wikipedia Expert. Please reach out to them if you have any questions through the Get Help button at the top of this page.
Please read:
This week, everyone should have a Wikipedia account. Make sure that when you sign up that you choose a username that is not your full identity (name), choose a nickname. Also, if you think you might edit in Wikipedia articles in the future/after you finish at UCI, consider using your personal email address to create an account rather than your uci.edu e-mail address.
Create an account and join this course page, using the enrollment link your instructor sent you. (Because of Wikipedia's technical restraints, you may receive a message that you cannot create an account. To resolve this, please try again off campus or the next day.)
In class on October 4, you will choose which article that you are going to edit/work on for your assignment.
Resource: Editing Wikipedia, pages 7–9
Everyone has begun writing/working on their article drafts.
Now's the time to revisit your text and refine your work. You may do more research and find missing information; rewrite the lead section to represent all major points; reorganize the text to communicate the information better, etc.
Bring your devices to class on Tuesday Nov 1. This will be a working session.
Continue to expand and improve your work, and format your article to match Wikipedia's tone and standards. Remember to contact your Wikipedia Expert at any time if you need further help!
Now that you've improved your draft based on others' feedback, it's time to move your work live - to the "mainspace" after your professor approves your work.
Resource: Editing Wikipedia, page 13
It's the final week to develop your article.
Everyone should have finished all of the work they'll do on Wikipedia, and be ready for grading.
