Endangered Languages: What We Lose when a Language Dies
In this course, we will investigate such questions as: What causes language endangerment and death, and why does it matter? Can dying languages be revitalized? How are thought, identity, and culture influenced by language, and vice versa? The course is designed to hone students' reading, writing, and research skills. Satisfies the second half of the reading and composition requirement. Students will edit Wikipedia articles about specific endangered languages.
This week, everyone should have a Wikipedia account.
Create an account and join this course page, using the enrollment link your instructor sent you. (Because of Wikipedia's technical restraints, you may receive a message that you cannot create an account. To resolve this, please try again off campus or the next day.)
Welcome to your Wikipedia assignment's course timeline. This page guides you through the steps you'll need to complete for your Wikipedia assignment, with links to training modules and your classmates' work spaces.
Your course has been assigned a Wikipedia Expert. You can reach them through the Get Help button at the top of this page.

Complete the trainings in the module by Monday, 7/20 at 10 am.
For this assignment, choose an article that is related to your Paper 2 topic, and about which you have done research. This can be the language or dialect you are working on, the community where it is spoken, or some other closely related topic, for example a revitalization method you plan to recommend.
Using the article you chose for the "Evaluate Wikipedia" assignment, or a different article related to your Paper 2 topic, add at least 2 citations using the scholarly sourcesyou have reviewed as part of your research.
Reach out to your Wikipedia Expert if you have questions using the Get Help button at the top of this page.
Resource: Editing Wikipedia, pages 7–9
As with the previous assignment to add citation, this should be based on an article related to your Paper 2 topic. This time you will be filling in gaps in the content of the article.
Make sure to review the guidance regarding Wikipedia writing style on page 8.
You can either add content to an article in English, or translate an article into another language. If you choose to translate existing content, please complete the Translating Articles Training.
