This course critically examines the nature, role, and significance of new communication technologies in contemporary (largely) U.S. culture. It considers the relationship between these technologies and popular conceptions of work, leisure, art, knowledge, identity, and environment and thus provides a foundation for understanding the nature, role, and significance of new communication technologies as a dynamic factor in society. Students will be editing (or creating) entries on some of the authors whose work we read as well as articles related to course topics.
Welcome to your Wikipedia assignment's course timeline. This page guides you through the steps you'll need to complete for your Wikipedia assignment, with links to training modules and your classmates' work spaces.
Your course has been assigned a Wikipedia Expert. You can reach them through the Get Help button at the top of this page.
Resources:
By the end of our first week of classes (or by the end of the grace period) everyone should have a Wikipedia account and complete this first training module. Create an account and join this course page, using the enrollment link your instructor sent you. Because of Wikipedia's technical restraints, you may receive a message that you cannot create an account. To resolve this, first contact the Wiki Ed staff (see WikiEdu Home page) to find out what happened. You ma need to try again using a different internet connection or the next day. If you use a VPN I may need to set up an account for you. Please contact me EARLY to arrange this, but contact the Wiki Ed staff first to confirm what the problem was.
Reach out to your Wikipedia Expert if you have questions using the Get Help button at the top of this page.
Resource: Editing Wikipedia, pages 7–9
You are required to do the "Be Bold" and "Talk Page" tutorials
I recommend starting the evaluation and switching articles if it turns out you cannot find much to add/edit. IF YOU ARE ELECTING TO CREATE A NEW ARTICLE: evaluate an article that is similar to the one you are creating (i.e. an biographical article if you are writing about a person, or an article about a similar topic).
[[../../../training/students/choose-topic-from-list-exercise|You can either Choose your topic / Find your sources from a list your instructor has prepared for you or you can choose your own subject by going through the exercise and training above.]]
You are welcome to continue working on your article this week, catching up on trainings you have missed, or taking advantage of the Temple Wellness Day and having a break from Wikipedia.
Now's the time to build up your draft and refine your work. Go back to the evaluation you did in Week 4 and figure out all the things you plan on editing, adding, expanding, and reorganizing about the article you have assigned yourself. Your credit this week is based on you having made additional progress on your article beyond what was done for the Week 5-Week 7 assignments.
These will be made available to your classmates for peer-review. Once your draft is ready for review put: DRAFT READY FOR REVIEW at the top of your sandbox
You have been assigned a peer's sandbox to review. Respond to ALL the questions listed in the instructions in Canvas
You now have some feedback from your classmate and and instructor.
In your talk page of your draft: talk about what the feedback was and what you will work on in response. Including anything else you plan on doing before the final contribution is due.
Bonus: Find your peer reviewer's and/or instructor's user page and leave a (nice) message for them on their talk page.
Resources:
To make the improvements suggested you may need to review these training modules. Remember to contact your Wikipedia Expert at any time if you need further help!
Move your work out of Wikipedia, following along with the training as you go.
If you edited an existing article: You are NOT moving your sandbox to the WIkipedia mainspace! If you create a new page be sure to copy your work into a new sandbox as well, and delete the talk page content for the LIVE page you have published.
Resource: Editing Wikipedia, page 13
It's the final chance to develop your article before final grading
Everyone should have finished all of the work they'll do on Wikipedia, and be ready for grading.
