Students will perform a set of laboratory experiments covering areas of biochemistry such as protein analysis, enzyme purification, enzymatic assays, recombinant DNA and the polymerase chain reaction. The Wikipedia assignment will provide students with an opportunity to conduct secondary research in library databases and to contribute findings and sources to Wikipedia articles in the discipline.
Welcome to your Wikipedia assignment's course timeline. This page guides you through the steps you'll need to complete for the Wikipedia assignment, and includes links to the training modules required for this course. All training, exercises, and contributions are due April 30, 2021.
There are also tips on signing up for an account and searching for sources in the Wikipedia lesson in VoiceThread, on BlackBoard
Resources:
Create an account and join this course page, using the enrollment link your instructor sent you. (Because of Wikipedia's technical restraints, you may receive a message that you cannot create an account. To resolve this, please try again off campus or the next day.)
Select one of the biochemistry stubs from this page: Biochemistry stubs
Once you have decided on an article stub, begin your research. Use the Hunter College Libraries databases to find information you want to add to the stub. You should locate two peer review sources on which to base your contribution(s). There are tips for this in the Wikipedia lesson on BlackBoard.
Reach out to me (ifinkelhunter.cuny.edu) if you have questions.
Resource: Editing Wikipedia, pages 7–9
Everyone has begun writing their contributions in their sandbox.
Now's the time to revisit your text and refine your work. You may do more research and find missing information; rewrite the lead section to represent all major points; reorganize the text to communicate the information better; or add images and other media.
Continue to expand and improve your work, and format your article to match Wikipedia's tone and standards. Remember to contact me at any time if you need further help!
Now that you've improved your draft it's time to move your work live - to the "mainspace."
Resource: Editing Wikipedia, page 13
It's the final week to develop your article.
By April 30th, everyone should have finished all of the work you'll do on Wikipedia for the assignment, and be ready for grading.
