The railroad of the
Virginia and Southwestern Railway Company, herein called the Virginia and Southwestern, is a single-track, standard-gage, steam railroad, located in the States of Virginia and Tennessee. The owned mileage extends southwesterly from St. Charles, Va., to Mountain City, Tenn., and from Moccasin Gap, Va., to Bull's Gap, Tenn., with branches from Big Stone Gap to Linden Mines, Va., from Rexford to Buladeen, Tenn., and from Persia Junction to Rogersville, Tenn. The Virginia and Southwestern also operates exclusively, under lease, 13.931 miles between Rogersville and Bull's Gap, Tenn., owned by the Southern. The Virginia and Southwestern wholly owns and uses 268.783 miles of all tracks and uses but does not own 22.053 miles of all tracks. It also owns and uses an undivided half interest in 0.102 mile of yard tracks and sidings.

No rental charges, Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company pays such proportion of total expense of operation and maintenance as the number of tickets sold and number of freight tons handled for it bear to the number of tickets sold and freight tons handled.
In addition the Virginia and Southwestern leases for sole operation that portion of the Southern Railway Company's railroad extending from Bulls Gap to Rogersville, Tenn., a distance of about 14 miles.
