I would like to add an awards bar (?) to represent the military awards of the subject I am writing about. This suggestion came dfrom a reviewer of my article and I could use some help in getting it done. Thanks. Wiki-Folks,

I'm working on my first article and need some help. My first submission was declined on the basis of the tone not adequately formal and a need for more references. Also, I have issues with setting the copyrights on images of art work that I wish to upload.

Question #1: The review noted this text: "best known for his unique bas-relief woodcarvings" as unacceptable. I assume if I change that to "know for bas-relief woodcarvings" that that would be acceptable, yes?

Question #2: Is it possible someone could take a look at the article and give me further guidance in pointing out unacceptable language?

Question #3: I have a photographic portrait of the artist. As the heir of the artist I have the rights to this photograph. I would like to know how to upload it with the appropriate copyright.

Question #4: I have photographic copies of representative samples of the artist's work that I would like to upload as well. Again, as the artist's heir I own the original works. And again, I would like to know how to upload the photographic copies with the appropriate copyright.

Hi Jackxjoy, I can't answer #3 or #4, but will take a stab at the first two.

1. I agree that the reviewer was most likely troubled by the word "unique", Your proposed wording is likely to pass muster.
2. There is a guideline, Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Words to watch. It is important to take to heart, but is of limited help in locating problematic language. Write plainly and be wary of adjectives and adverbs. If the draft says "ubiquitous spirals" then a source must be cited that says spirals are everywhere. If it says "skillfully carved" then a source must be cited that says in effect that it was "skillfully" carved as opposed to just "carved", "rudely carved", etc. The draft's language may sometimes be too florid, but it's very difficult to judge because long stretches of the draft cite no sources. Is "a half-veiled female figure floating in a liquid cosmos amid a skein of brisk currents and abstract fishes" your analysis, the artist's description, that of some critic? Without a source, any reader might feel justified in changing the text to their own interpretation, which might be "a bunch of squiggly lines".

The biggest thing keeping the draft from being approved is a shortage of references. There are also lesser problems:

• With regard to tone, apply WP:SURNAME. Basically, after the first sentence the name "Vernon" should not appear again. "Smith" must be used instead, except in sentences where doing so would cause confusion with another Smith. This change will address the draft's chummy tone, making it more formal, more appropriate for an encyclopedia.
• There must be no external links within the body of the article, nothing that, if clicked, would take the reader away from Wikipedia. Delete them, move them into the external links section, or convert them into references if they prove the statement where they appear (I'm not sure any do).
• Lists of exhibitions should be in chronological order, oldest to most recent.
