Why don't you just make this Wikiproject? -- Dangerous-Boy
Guys,
I renamed the section "Philippine Wikipedias" because as yet, there is no Filipino Wikipedia. There are instead four wikipedias in languages native to the Philippines.
Umm, was there any consensus to segregate the discussion section into "Peer review", "Article deliberation", "Requests and proposals", and "Technical maintenance" as it is now? I preferred how it was before... it's easier to keep track of things when the most recent topic is at the bottom. And it makes archiving simpler. Coffee 12:36, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Da very first topic! Hello!! Welcome!!
I have so many things to say. (KSP kasi ako)I have many issues about the Philippines. (We all do) . One is language. I was born in Capiz. In Manila, I feel pressured to speak Tagalog and not to speak English. Hindi kami mayaman! Kahit tindera ka sa palengke o nag-bebenta ka ng yosi or isang bank -executive dapat pwede kang mag -salita ng English, Tagalog, Spanish o Japanese (I speak these fluently), and others Cebuano, Ilocano, etc. Ang sabi, English is a language for the Konyo's (Socialites). It shouldn't be. It is just a language. Cebuanos don't like to speak Tagalog. That's all. In college, a librarian scolded someone for not speaking Tagalog. He responded that he was a Malaysian and could not speak Tagalog. Indonesians and Malaysians look like us. We should recognize that English is our formal language and Tagalog(and others) is( are) our informal language(s). --

An anon user of the Tagalog Wikipedia asked this question:
So what do you guys think? How should we respond to the question. Xe is also asking if we could change the name of the Wikipedia [2]. -- Blue Mask| Talk 03:30, Feb 15, 2005 (UTC)
(Start a new par. , naiipit na eh.) Filipino/Pilipino reflects the official national (constructed)language. Tagalog reflects or implies the local language. Didn't Quezon and his team reconstruct the Filipino ? I didn't add this yet to the wikipedia articles but I read somewhere that Quezon and co. were afraid of opposition from the Cebuano and other language groups, so instead of naming the language Tagalog, it became Filipino/Pilipino. We have similar problems with for example Spain ( to call it Espanyol or Castellano?, also, Basque, Catalunian, Gallego , etc are considered 'Spanish' languages') . Not only Spain, but India(Hindi, Tamil etc.), China(Chinese or Mandarin, Putonghua, also local Cantonese, Fookien etc.) etc. have issues whether to call it the name of the local dialect or to reflect the name of the nation. Take a poll(Tagalog or Filipino)?
About the Cebuano, etc. Well, no one is stopping them but are there anyone of those groups who really want to start wikipedia in those languages? --

Hello, I thought this might be the proper place to post this, since the Tagalog Wikipedia has no Tambayan_Philippines. I noticed that some articles in the Tagalog Wikipedia might be better placed in Wiktionary; for instance, I don't think "Akumulasyon" or "Kulangot" could have much more than a definition. I couldn't list it on the Tagalog Things_to_be_moved_to_Wiktionary, since there was no such page. Also, the Tagalog Wiktionary appears to be empty, so I couldn't really figure out what to do.
I also noticed some useless entries, such as "Marso 24", which say nothing but how many days are left in the year from that day. Since there doesn't seem to be a page for nominating items for deletion, I couldn't do much about it either... -- Cma 00:51, 30 May 2005

Now there are three languages of the Philippines that have a Wikipedia! Welcome the Cebuano and Pampangan Wikipedia! -- Blue Mask| Talk 01:02, Jun 27, 2005 (UTC)
I worry the use of "ceb" for the Cebuano Wikipedia. I hear that some people believe that it should be spelled sebuano, and hence "seb". Also, more controversially, I hear lots of people say that calling that language "Cebuano" or "Sebuano" is too biased in favor of Cebu, because the same language is used broadly all over Mindanao, like Davao for instance. People there call the language Bisaya. I am starting to think that it should be called Bisaya. Just thinking out loud. -- Noypi380 6 July 2005 11:16 (UTC)

Bluemask already started making redirects to the city/muncipality articles in the form " Bangued -> Bangued, Abra". These pages should make it easier, and help would be appreciated:
All you need to do is copy the redirect text into the red links, or add a links to disambiguation pages, and other mundane stuff. :) TheCoffee 16:09, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
So there is a page for Filipino Americans but there is really none about the people in the Philippines. I am thinking of starting one, but what should be the title be? There is French people, Spanish people, but there is also Koreans and Czechs. So, should it be Filipinos or Filipino people? I'm leaning towards the former with the latter being a redirect à la Czechs. Ano'ng palagay ninyo? -- Chris 10:02, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Hello. I edited the disambiguation page of MRT, and discovered the system serving Metro Manila is also abbreviated as MRT. The problem here is that when I was looking for the full name, both "Mass Rail Transit" and "Metro Rail Transit" were found. The same happened when I search on Google for government websites (site:gov.ph). Which is the actual official name? It seems to me that both are used, and as common. — Insta ntnood 18:51, August 7, 2005 (UTC)
There is a a request on Meta for a Kinaray-a Wikipedia. I voted. If you're interested, go ahead and vote.
And if you weren't aware, voting is still open for the proposal for a Waray-Waray Wikipedia.
I'm still surprised that there is no request for an Ilokano & Hiligaynon wikipedia, since these languages are spoken more than Kapampangan, Waray-Waray, and Kinaray-a combined. -- Chris 02:46, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
Is there a strict definition? Were they members of La Solidaridad only ? Or does the definition include all Filipino inteligentsia, intellectuals and illuminati both in Spain and in the Philppines ?-- Jondel 02:48, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
210.213.152.145 (and similar IP addresses) have been putting these accents on all these words on Philippine pages lately. Like this edit and this. Is that acceptable? Personally I'd prefer it without all of those accents. To me it's "Cebu", not "Cebú"; "Cagayan", not "Cagayán"; "Raul Roco", not "Raúl Roco". I don't think I can contact him through his talk page since he appears with a different IP address each time. Coffee 11:35, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
Accents/Diacritcs and other pronounciation aids may really be useful for non-filipinos (learning the language). I was at a convention where an American visitor was trying to pronounce 'ng' literally when he was reading Tagalog in front of thousands of people. It was hilarious.-- Jondel 02:19, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
Sometimes those accent marks, when used thoughout the article, is kind of annoying to the eye. Is it really necessary? If it's neccessary then maybe the terms or words can be accented only the first time they are mentioned in the article. -- Saluyot 02:46, August 9, 2005 (UTC)
I cleaned up Original Pilipino Music recently, and when I looked at my watchlist yesterday I noticed it was listed for deletion. I tried to argue a case for keeping it, but since I'm not Filipino and have never been to the Philippines, I might not have known anything about the topic! :-D Please vote on it at its VfD entry. If you have anything to add to it, I encourage you to expand that article. It's currently a stub and doesn't say very much, so that may have been the reason for its VfD listing. -- Idont Havaname 15:08, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
I removed Kirk Hammet of Metallica in the examples of Filipino Rock stars cited in the article because I feel that this is misleading. My position is that a member of a particular Rock group or band may be regarded as a "Rock star" only in the sense that s/he is a member of a popular Rock group; to include the nationality in the appellation "Rock star," I feel, is unfair to the band as a whole. Case in point, Kirk Hammet is Filipino, but he is a member of an American Rock band, making him only a part of a whole. Considering him a Filipino Rock star is misleading and unfair to Metallica as an American band. Unless Hammet begins to establish a solo career, only then would calling him a Filipino Rock star become legitimate. I would love to read some opinions concerning this trivial yet delicate point. -- eLf_ideas 2:16, 13 August 2005 (CT)

I disagree with Schmuckys statement. Conflicts are not a sign of potentially good RFAs. If there is no issue to dispute about, there should be no conflicts. In fact I believe , admins should try to generate harmony , cooperativity, good faith; a 'win-win' situation. However, conflicts do seem unavoidable. It was published in 1849 and is the source of surnames for perhaps the vast majority of Filipinos - even yours (mine too)!. You guys will probably find it interesting. Hey people. I have a feeling that something big is going to happen politically in the country today, Sept 7, or tommorrow, Sept 8. Perhaps a new president? New government? Lots of people are mobilizing and I mean mobilizing and that reminds me of you know what during 1986 and 2001. That is why I am asking if anyone would object, or possibly vote for, starting an article by the temporary name of 2005 Philippine revolution? My connections also are using a color or a flower for the name of the event eh. -- Noypi380 07:48, 7 September 2005 (UTC)
From the looks of it, they cannot topple Gloria Arroyo. Not yet. The opposition is fragmented, each group have their own separate agenda. So, we cannot expect another "EDSA revolution" these times. The Filipino people are tired of it. -- saluyot 02:01, September 8, 2005 (UTC)

Whew... we now have at least stub articles for all 1617 cities and municiaplities. See List of cities and municipalities in the Philippines. :) TheCoffee 8 July 2005 09:26 (UTC)
How does one use Tagalog Wiktionary? -- Noypi380 03:48, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
Mga kaibigan - I put Jondel up for nomination for administrator. He has accepted his candidacy If you would like to vote for him, please see Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Jondel . Salamat, -- Chris 18:22, 30 July 2005 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your valued support. Chris and Seav, I feel, should be administrators, however Seav declines.-- Jondel 07:53, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for your support again. Sa totoo lang , like Seav I dread it when someone will say ' He should know , hes an administrator. ' Don't know if I'm that familiar with the rules. Dugay na ako dir, tuntun pa gyapun ah.. There are many other pinoys here who really should be administrators.-- Jondel 07:07, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
FYI, I created a Wikiportal for the Philippines. -- Jojit fb 07:17, 3 August 2005 (UTC)

If Philippine languages interest you, I am doing this "blogathon" thing at my blog where I blog for seven days straight about nothing but Philippine languages. Link here http://salitablog.blogspot.com -- Chris 03:05, 5 August 2005 (UTC)
Ako din, plug: If anyone's interested in Filipino satire, I've a blog which I update every week. Contributions are desperately needed.
He died today, and I cannot find enough information on the cause of his death.
The current Hong Kong Collaboration of the Week is Filipinos in Hong Kong. Let's help in making it NPOV by having our share of edits.
Congratz to Jondel. He's been promoted to administrator with a whooping 40 unanimous votes! w00t! Mahal ka pala ng buong mundo. Naselos tuloy ako. Ha! ;-) -- Chris 01:35, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
I created an article for Cristeta Comerford, the new head chef at the White House. I found very little information on her. If you guys know any more, feel free to add. -- Chris S. 04:14, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
chief, chief, chief, chief, chief, chugah chugah chuga, chuga, toot toot. All aboard
I threw together Timeline of Philippine history to hopefully be a good companion to History of the Philippines (like Timeline of United States history). It's patchy and unbalanced right now (and starts with Magellan), but everyone's invited to improve it. :p Coffee 18:48, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

Don't feel obligated to have conflicts, they just come on their own. -- Jondel 02:26, 22 August 2005 (UTC)
Since I have a copy of the book, I decided to make a page for Catálogo Alfabético de Apellidos. It was published in 1849 and is the source of surnames for perhaps the vast majority of Filipinos - even yours (mine too)!. You guys will probably find it interesting. I am planning on scanning a couple of pages and including it into the article. I don't have a scanner here at home, so it'll probably take a while. In the meantime, enjoy. -- Chris S. 23:15, 20 August 2005 (UTC)

While translating Cities of the Philippines to Dutch for use on the Dutch Wikipedia, I found that Caloocan City was not on the (alphabetical) list of 117 cities. After adding this city to the list, I saw that the list now has 118 cities instead of the quoted 117. Does anyone know/see which city is not a city? Or do we have 118 cities in the meantime?
Is it too much? Is it even allowed? :p Comments, suggestions... Coffee 10:57, 9 September 2005 (UTC)

That sounds like a good idea. What constitutes "simple" English, and what constitutes a "major" article? I'm guessing you don't mean Simple English. :P -- Migs 04:26, 15 September 2005 (UTC)
