Suspected sockpuppets

AugustusAudax made the edit to The Offspring, changing the band's genre from punk rock to rock on May 30, stating "Changed "punk" rock band to just rock band." [1] Some time between then and June 21, an editor changed it back to punk rock, which is the genre supported by sources and most referenced within the article itself. At that point, an anonymous edit, from 2604:3d09:a77f:fda0:78be:d011:f004:b29d, changed it back to rock. [2] I reverted it myself and shortly after, the same editor reverted it back to rock, stating "JacobESTjalma is dumb to put that because punk rock is already stated in genres." In my next revert, I explained that being stated elsewhere in the article does not mean that it shouldn't be stated in the lead. [3] Six days later, AugustusAudax's confirmed sock account, Key of G Minor, made two consecutive edits, changing it back to rock band and making the false statement "consensus is that they’re a ROCK band" and "I’m sick of this bs." [4] When I explained that their statement about consensus was false and that they should discuss on the talk page, they did. Over the next three weeks or so, the RfC comments supported the genre staying punk rock. Ten days after their initial RfC, Key of G Minor was blocked by Bbb23 as a sock puppet of AugustusAudax. Now, attempts to change it back to rock band are happening again from an IP address similar to the one making the earlier edits. Those addresses are 2604:3d09:a77f:fda0:d9be:4bd:3b77:65de [5] and 2604:3d09:a77f:fda0:70c1:4b42:5ba8:a121, the latter using the familiar argument of "Punk rock is already stated in genres section." • If the evidence is suggesting that this is not AA/KoG, that’s good enough for me. It just seemed to all line up and it seems that they are making strides towards doing better. Blocking the IP will help as well. Is there a chance of getting at least some temporary semi-protection at The Offspring as now another IP is forgoing the RoC discussion and making the same change? • This /64 has been genre-warring since September, and was blocked once by Materialscientist. If this SPI doesn't result in a sockblock, I intend to block the range for regular DE. To start off here I'd like to ask, @ Binksternet and FMSky: Does either of you recognize this genre-warrior? -- Tamzin[ cetacean needed (she|they|xe) 20:43, 6 August 2023 (UTC) reply
  • Thanks, Binksternet and FMSky, for your fast responses. All right, so, the question is whether this is AugustusAudax/KoGm, or a coincidental genre-warrior. KoGm asserts on their talk, in response to this SPI, that they live in Indianopolis, which of course could be a lie, but it's at least consistent with a previous claim of being in the U.S. (Which could also be a lie, but would have required some foresight.) The IPs share AA/KoGm's immaturity in some edit summaries, but the vibe's a bit different—inconclusive, in my opinion. Genre-warring isn't new on this article, so coincidence is a distinct possibility. Furthermore, this range has not come up in at least two previous checks of the account. My tendency is to close without action (specifically as >50% chance coincidence) and then block the /64 for a year for disruptive editing. That said, I've been giving KoGm advice on their talkpage, so, while I'm not WP:INVOLVED, one could argue I have an emotional bias in favor of innocence here. As such, I will request peer review from another clerk or admin before doing anything here. -- Tamzin[ cetacean needed (she|they|xe) 21:41, 6 August 2023 (UTC) reply
