2015 Arbitration Committee Elections

Status

  • The December 2015 Arbitration Committee Election results have been posted.
  • Please offer your feedback on the election process.

During the 2012 Arbitration Committee Election Request for comment, it was decided by consensus that a three-member Electoral Commission would be created to address issues arising during the Arbitration Committee elections. This decision was reaffirmed in subsequent years and the existence of the Commission is now part of the standard procedure for the annual elections. The Electoral Commission is reconstituted each year for purposes of that year's election.

Editors wishing to volunteer as a Commissioner for 2015 should create a section on this RfC. All editors are encouraged to comment on the suitability of the volunteers for this role. Three volunteers with the strongest support, determined by consensus based upon comments posted until one week after the close of nominations, will be chosen as Commissioners. Any remaining applicants who have consensus support but are not in the top three will be designated as reserve Commissioners, to be called upon if one of the Commissioners is unable to serve. If the consensus is not readily apparent, one or more bureaucrats will help close the discussion.

The mandate of the Electoral Commission is to deal with any unforeseen problems that may arise in the 2015 Arbitration Committee election process, and to adjudicate any disputes during the election. However, members of the Election Commission should intervene only when there is a problem that needs resolving, and either discussion is not working, the rules are unclear, or there isn't time for a lengthy discussion.

In addition, while the Electoral Commission is not responsible for logistics of the election, the Commissioners should also help ensure that preparations for the election—such as setting up the relevant pages, posting notices of the election in the appropriate places, and asking the Office to configure the SecurePoll voting interface—move forward in a timely fashion.

Commissioners and reserve members are not eligible for election to the Arbitration Committee during this year's election. Commissioners must be able and willing to satisfy the requirements of the access to nonpublic information policy.

The timeline for the appointment of the 2015 Electoral Commission is as follows:

  • Nominations: Friday 00:01, 9 October – Friday 23:59, 16 October (8 days)
  • Evaluation period: Saturday 00:01, 17 October – Friday 23:59, 23 October (7 days)
  • Commission selection: completed by Friday 23:59, 30 October

Results

Just to make it "official", I have used my keen powers of consensus-reading to determine that the three editors who volunteered to a three person commission, all with unanimous support, are indeed selected for the 2015 Electoral Commission:

  1. Mdann52
  2. Mike V
  3. Guy Macon

So it is written, so it shall be done. Congratulations to the successful candidates. Thanks to all who participated. -- Floquenbeam ( talk) 18:02, 27 October 2015 (UTC) reply

I've been an editor here for close to 3 years now, mainly doing behind the scenes work – currently, I serve on the OTRS and ACC teams, so I have experience dealing with the straightforward and far more complex issues that can arise on-wiki. I feel I am impartial as I am not a current member of a committee, and do not intend to stand as an Arb for some time to come. I have read and understand the functionality of the SecurePoll extension, so hopefully I should be up to speed with this. I have already worked in roles covered by the NPD policy, and am willing to keep it here as well.

Hello, I'm Mike V. I'm an active member on OTRS, the account creation team, and serve the community as a functionary. Last year, I also served as an electoral commissioner and would be happy to take up this role again. As a functionary, I'm very familiar with the privacy policy and take great care to ensure the confidentiality of the information I come across. Through my past role as an electoral commissioner I've become very familiar with the secure poll interface. If appointed, I'm more than willing to help guide the other two commissioners through all the details. Mike VTalk 23:03, 12 October 2015 (UTC) reply

Hello, I am Guy Macon. I have been an editor for over nine years (clean block log), made 28,000 edits, and am an active WP:DRN volunteer. I have been actively monitoring and occasionally participating in arbcom cases for at least five years, so I know what kind of problems are likely to arise and how similar situations were dealt with in the past.

In real life I am a consultant who gets called in as an independent mediator to resolve disputes between engineers or between engineers and management. I am volunteering for this so that there will be three candidates, and I am confident that I can do a good job, but if another qualified candidate shows up at the last minute I would prefer to be an alternate. -- Guy Macon ( talk) 16:48, 15 October 2015 (UTC) reply
