Candidate, please indicate acceptance of the nomination here:

A self-inflicted candidacy.

I have been here since November 2003. I have created (according to Kate's Tool) 1,700+ edits in articles, and 2819 edits overall. I have created roughly twenty pages that went to the VfD, of which roughly a dozen met the axe. I have created programs here, have fought programs here, and have participated in programs here (see below for details) and I believe that I could use the power and the prestige (such as it is) of adminship to bring about more of the same.

  1. Oppose. I have no memorable interactions with this user, but the fact that he listed his nomination in the wrong place [1], has voted for himself (which is... unorthodox), and has made many typos and errors in his acceptance and answers shows a lack of familiarity, understanding, and respect for the process. Furthermore. I would think that an admin should at least make sure to read the instructions on a page, follow conventions, and be meticulous with editing, particularly for something as difficult as a self-nomination. -- DropDeadGorgias (talk) 17:03, July 25, 2005 (UTC)
A self-nomination is not difficult. Working around personal flaws to convince people as astute as yourself that I am suitable for the job is difficult. Please remember that I'm not feigning greatness here: I nominated myself with intent to repair backlogged processes, not edit the Main Page or something high-level. Something I should have mentioned - and legitimately forgot to - was that a lot of my edits are corrections to previous edits. Something positive that I forgot and should have mentioned was that I was recently awarded a Barnstar for dedication, but that is something else. I am reasonably good at spelling, but tend to misstrike keys. I have run both my nomination statement and this reply through MS Word, and hope that they are now correct. As for your other complaints...well you've actually got me dead to rights on all counts except respect, and that's not something you can gauge. Do my corrections count for anyting to you? And if not, why? Of course, in retrospect "if that's how you spell it" was a bad phrase to contribute to an opening statement. - Litefantastic 22:47, 25 July 2005 (UTC) reply
  2. Oppose. Opening statement and answers to the standard questions do not indicate a familiarity with what administrators typically do. Managing Wikipedia:This week's improvement drive shows dedication, but you appear to have litle experience doing admin-like activities (VfD and its counterparts, vandalism reversion). The "checkered past" is also of some concern; elaboration on this would be most helpful. android 79 01:19, July 26, 2005 (UTC)
Actually, I think I explained that fairly well. The only real trouble I ever got in was for making up words, and even then, my other edits were all deliberately productive. I only brought that up because I believe that 1) voters deserve the full story, and 2) voters will find out one way or another, and an honest confession looks better than deliberate concealment. - Litefantastic 16:03, 26 July 2005 (UTC) reply
  3. Weak Oppose primarily based on two things, both from the acceptance message above: you've had twenty VfDed articles!? I mean, one or two is okay, but twenty? That strongly suggests that you're out of step with the sorts of articles should have. What sort of articles were they, anyway? Also, the part about "the power and the prestige (such as it is) of adminship" also rubs me the wrong way. I suspect that it was intended jokingly (hence the "such as it is" part)... though if that's the case, why insult a position you're simultaneously seeking? Andrew Lenahan - Starblind 03:18, July 26, 2005 (UTC)
Sorry it rubs you the wrong way. The articles that were nominated for deletion were my made up words (I actually turned myself in on at least one of them) and a couple pages where it was seriously debated that the article actually warrented existance based on significance (such as Richard Nixon mask and Aglet). I once nominated List of real people appearing in fictional context for PR, and was told that it was a bad article that could never be finished. In that case, I actually nominated myself for deletion, just to see whether or not the article was worth keeping (I voted keep). In another case, I nominated my Petition for the return of the Old Wikipedia for deletion when I realized that all it was doing was taking up space after failing to garner enough votes to really make a difference. Still another case is Wikipedia:General complaints, which was VfD'd but pulled through. - Litefantastic 16:03, 26 July 2005 (UTC) reply
  4. Oppose Bunch of reasons. First of all, 1,700 edits is nothing for someone who has been here for that long. Plus, 20 articles going to vfd is a ton for someone without that many edits. Like was said earlier, one or 2 is ok but 20? Plus, I'm not sure he knows what admins do. I would strongly suggest reading the Administrators reading list so you have some understanding about what admins do. Reading the answers to the questions, it sounds like the user thinks that being an admin is something you should be given for good deeds. It doesn't quite work that way. It's more of using it for things such as vfds or for conflict resolution. It isn't really a reward for goodness. You need to show that you will use the powers and use them well. And also, the "checkered past" bothers me as well. I appreciate the honesty, but that indicates a willingness to get into conflict. Admins don't have alot of powers but what they do have could cause problems in that kind of situation. -- Woohookitty 06:31, 26 July 2005 (UTC) reply
    • I have explained above the rather varied situations leading to my many VfDs. As for lack of knowledge on what Administrators do, I would like to again state that I was head admin of my own wikicity, and so I actually have administrative powers there (although, to date, I've only deleted junk pages and blocked the Main Page on and off). As for my apparantly low edit count, the figure I quoted was without Wikipedia namespace edits - if those are counted, my number goes up to 2819. - Litefantastic 16:03, 26 July 2005 (UTC) reply
  5. Oppose per Starblind. -- Idont Havaname 17:48, 26 July 2005 (UTC) reply
  6. Oppose You haven't mentioned anything about stopping vandals, which, in my opinion, is the point of being an admin. You just haven't got your priorities in the correct order. Ryan 03:21, July 28, 2005 (UTC)

Questions for the candidate
A few generic questions to provide guidance for voters:

1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with? (Please read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.)
A. I must go with all the backlogged stuff, like deleting article talk pages that have no articles, or merging categories and such.
2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
A. I was the originator of, one of the founding members of, and for eight terms the manager of, the Article Improvement Drive (now called Wikipedia:This week's improvement drive, which was - and is - a "next step" companion program to the Wikipedia:Collaborations of the week. It is currently flourishing under the management of User:Fenice.
For roughly one month - May - I ran the InuYasha wikicity, which I have since stopped doing because I could never drum up enough support to get a chain reaction going. I list that as an accomplishment because I had the gall and persuasiveness to get it done, but concede that, at least so far, it is a failure. Sorry about all that.
My most recent accomplishment, completed yesterday - or possibly today, depending on your time zone - was the successful and level-handed merger of vinyl record and gramophone record into one. This was a task that had been proposed - but not actually done - since 2002.
3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
A. Yes, and they (or at least the ones I mention here) were my fault. I have something of a checkered past, in that I had a penchant for creating neologisms and I made a whole bunch of people mad back in 2004. I have since stopped doing that, and I've been 'clean', if that's what you call it, for just about a year. I did create Collect the pieces plot, but I wasn't trying to make that up. I was just trying to put a name to an existing phenomenon - which is what I think they did with heavy metal umlaut, and THAT is a featured article. Probably my most famous creation is amerime, which I created last year. This page was deleted three times because OTHER PEOPLE, NOT ME, kept reposting it.
