The Andrew Jackson article of the book "The Look It Up Book of Presidents" says that the Democratic (formerly Democratic Republican) and Whig (formerly National Republican) parties were formed by splitting the Jeffersonian Republican party into 2 new parties after the Federalist party almost died. Internet sites, however, say that the Democratic party is the descendant of the Jeffersonian Republican party and the Whig party is the descendant of the Federalist party. Who is correct??
