Mogas

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was Move Mogas (disambiguation) to Mogas. Per the discussion, unclear consensus on a specific non-disambiguation target seems to be forming, so moving the disambiguation page to the base title would essentially be the equivalent of no consensus. ( non-admin closure) Steel1943 ( talk) 20:16, 11 April 2017 (UTC) reply

I am unfamiliar with this term (never heard it here in North America) and found it redirects to a section in Gasoline that doesn't mention it at all except in a hatnote that says "Mogas" redirects here. Not very helpful. MB 03:29, 1 April 2017 (UTC) reply

RetargetAvgas#Automotive gasoline. Mogas is a common term in the aviation community used to distinguish gasoline used in road vehicles from aviation gasoline which is called Avgas. The redirect target which is currently to Gasoline § Etymology and terminology should go into this distinction but doesn't leaving the issue hanging. It is covered in the Avgas article in the lead and in section "Automotive gasoline" so that is a useful destination for this term. Geraldo Perez ( talk) 04:54, 1 April 2017 (UTC) reply
  • Keep add documentation to the redirect (such as {{ redirect documentation}}) indicating that this redirect exists for a particular reason (that it means road motor vehicle petrol, as it is so called in aviation) It's just a synonym for road gasoline, and used pretty widely. And it is helpful since if you want to read about mogas you get to the correct article, and can read about mogas. If you never see the term mogas, you will never want to search for it. Thus the redirect works fine, for people who encounter the term, they arrive at the correct article, since it is a synonym. -- 70.51.200.162 ( talk) 09:10, 1 April 2017 (UTC) reply
    • It is not a synonym, it is a hyponym that is not talked about at the article it directs to. Also people following redirects won't see any documentation at the redirect itself. Geraldo Perez ( talk) 17:32, 3 April 2017 (UTC) reply
  • Keep. It's a valid nickname, redirects are cheap. –  Train2104 ( t •  c) 11:02, 1 April 2017 (UTC) reply
  • Comment If the redirect is kept to gasoline, then the article should explain what it is. I saw the term mogas, didn't know what it meant, went to WP and typed it in, and was redirected to a place that didn't mention it. As per Geraldo Perez above, this left me hanging (is it a brand, some special variety of gasoline, or what?). The reader shouldn't have to infer from the section header that it is just a synonym. And it would be helpful to explain where it is used (geographically). MB 14:27, 1 April 2017 (UTC) reply
I agree, a note should be added "(sometimes known as mogas to differentiate it from avgas)", but I do not support retargeting to Avgas. It may be the right context, but it's the exact opposite item. –  Train2104 ( t •  c) 16:15, 1 April 2017 (UTC) reply
The current target covers all gasoline and mogas is only a type of gasoline as is avgas, not an alternative name for gasoline which the current redirect implies. Gasoline § Comparison with other fuels does touch on Avgas but does not make clear that mogas basically means not-avgas. The coverage at Avgas § Automotive gasoline is a lot more extensive and seems more useful to people interested in the topic without changing the contents of existing articles. Geraldo Perez ( talk) 16:31, 1 April 2017 (UTC) reply
  • Comment I just read the section in Avgas that mentions mogas and it says "Automotive gasoline — known as mogas or autogas among aviators" and then goes on to explain the differences between mogas and avgas. If this means the term is primarily used in the aviation world, then Avgas is probably a better redirect. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MB ( talkcontribs) 14:34, 1 April 2017 (UTC) reply
  • Move Mogas (disambiguation)Mogas – Between the meanings "slang for petrol" (motor gasoline), "! aviation gasoline", and the Ugandan Oil company ( MOGAS Group would be the primary topic in Africa, and we should take a worldwide view), there is no clear primary topic. This term is not common slang for gasoline in North America. The dab page also has a link to wikt:mogas, which clearly defines the (aviation) meaning: automotive gasoline suitable for use in piston-engined gasoline powered aircraft. This one is near and dear to me, as I still remember getting attacked in my RfA for creating the redirect MOGAS Oil (which I just restored) – wbm1058 ( talk) 18:43, 3 April 2017 (UTC) reply

Thryduulf ( talk) 13:27, 2 April 2017 (UTC) reply
      • @ Sakura Cartelet and Thryduulf: Somewhat implies that the person is actually mentioned in that redirect target not leaving the reader going Huh? what what does this have to do with anything? I added this RfD as I did exactly that, following a link and got nothing at all that indicated why I ended up at the redirect target even doing a search of the article for that name. ( AngusWOOF has added some info per comments above) Readers should know immediately why they got redirected to a target, not have to research the issue.
