Wikipedia:Multiyear ranking of most viewed pages

Wikipedia:Multiyear ranking of most viewed pages ( | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

I propose that this page be moved to userspace (not deleted!). I found this page by Googling "Wikipedia most viewed pages", where it is the first result for that query and high-up for similar ones. It gets about 8,000 pageviews a month, presumably from other readers who take the same path.

Its colorful commentary gave me a good laugh, for which I commend Maxaxax (the page's creator and primary contributor). However, this commentary (e.g. [1], [2], [3]), combined with the mishmash of data sources and topics, makes this seem more appropriate for user space than project space. I believe that readers interested in seeing the most popular pages on Wikipedia are better directed to Wikipedia:Top 25 Report, though a page that does list all of the most-viewed pages over the entire 2007–2021 collection period without commentary would be something I would like to see somewhere in WP space – perhaps that can be this page if it can be made more purely informative and statistical in nature.

Note: the page was previously in main space, and was moved to WP space in 2016 ( AfD). I am basing my reasoning here on the premise that this page will drop off of Google results once userfied, but I am not quite sure on this point – please correct me here if needed. — Goszei ( talk) 02:29, 23 April 2021 (UTC) reply

  • "It is not known which pages had led the ranking during Wikipedia's first months, although by the end of the first month (January 31, 2001) the most viewed page was Usenet cabal.". How appropriate considering you have the worst example of a wannabe Usenet cabal attempting to run the show around here. The difference lies with WMF providing a platform that creates the illusion of stability. It's still the same old shit show nonetheless. • Keep where it is, this is fine in wikipedia space. If this page being indexed by search engines is a problem (and I'm not convinced it is) __NOINDEX__ can be added to the page to prevent it. 86.23.109.101 ( talk) 13:17, 23 April 2021 (UTC) reply
  • Keep - Seems to be a perfectly reasonable page for WP space. The primary contributor does not own the page and so if the commentary is too colourful, the nominator is free to boldly change it or propose alternate wording on the talk page. -- Whpq ( talk) 19:23, 23 April 2021 (UTC) reply
  • Keep where it is. There's nothing wrong with a little jocularity, and we shouldn't try addressing with page moves what is at most a matter for the Talk page. XOR'easter ( talk) 21:31, 23 April 2021 (UTC) reply
