Portal:Peanuts

Portal:Peanuts ( | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

Another automated spam portal, which draws it "selected articles list" solely from List of peanut dishes, of which it is therefore a redundant fork. There is no non-automated version.

This portal was created [1] in December 2018 by @ The Transhumanist (TTH) as a fully-automated portal drawing its "selected articles" solely from Template:{{PAGENAME}}. That resolves to Template:Peanuts, which is about the cartoon character.

So in the next edit, TTH switched the source to List of peanut dishes. This makes the portal merely a bloated fork of that list, just as redundant as if the source was a navbox. (For a full explanation of why a portal cloned off a navbox is redundant, see the two mass deletions of similar portals: one, and two, where there was overwhelming consensus of a very high turnout to delete a total of 2,555 such portals).

Since the mass nominations, I have become aware of two newish features of Wikipedia which means that bare List of peanut dishes has all the functionality of the portal:

  1. mouseover: for ordinary readers who are not logged in, mouseover on any of the linked list items shows you the picture and the start of the lead. So the preview-selected page-function of portals is redundant: something almost as good is available automatically on any navbox or other set of links.
  2. automatic imagery galleries: for ordinary readers who are not logged in, clinking on an image brings up an image gallery of all the images on that page. It's full-screen, so it's actually better than even a click-for-next image gallery on a portal.

These functions have also been available since 2015 for users of the Wikipedia Android app.

The list also presents a lop-sided view of the topic. Category:Peanuts shows a lot of other peanut-related articles, which are not included in the portal.

I have some doubts that this single crop actually qualifies as broad topic to satisfy the WP:POG requirement that portals should be about "broad subject areas, which are likely to attract large numbers of interested readers and portal maintainers". Category:Peanuts isn't v big.

So I propose that this portal and its sub-pages be deleted per WP:TNT, without prejudice to recreating a curated portal in accordance with whatever criteria the community may have agreed at that time. But I wouldn't oppose outright deletion on grounds of the topic's narrowness. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • ( contribs) 01:51, 11 May 2019 (UTC) reply

  • Delete. per nomination. I question the logic of having a portal on a subject that has such poor coverage on the site -- you could say this portal is nuts! ( edit conflict) MJLTalk 02:43, 11 May 2019 (UTC) reply
  • Comment - Automated portal, 0 subpages, created 2018-12-10 13:46:39 by User:TTH, useless navigation tool, redundant to the existing articles and navboxes, and of lower quality. Could be expanded by using all the pages related to peanuts-related POTUS. Moreover, how will we prepare the famous 땅콩조림 (ddang-kong jorim) if peanuts were deleted ? Portal:Peanuts. • Delete per WP:POG portals are supposed to have a broad, diverse scope. The scope of this one is dishes involving peanuts, which isn't either. As noted by the nominator the functionality is duplicated by an existing list. The automated DYK section is particularly silly, most of the items relate to peanut worms (so named because they sometimes look like peanuts), and one other is about a motorsport race won by a guy who also works as a peanut farmer. • Delete: I was going to point that the comic book portal was enough and snark about this deletion being fully in-character with Charlie Brown's bad luck, but then I got the joke derailed when I noticed that the portal is about the edible peanuts. This is even less broad than the Snoopy gang! <sigh> Cambalachero ( talk) 16:43, 17 May 2019 (UTC) reply
