Portal:Health and fitness/Selected fitness article

Portal:Health and fitness/Selected fitness article ( | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Portal:Health and fitness/Selected nutrition article ( | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Portal:Health and fitness/Selected biochemistry article ( | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

This nomination is to delete three of the subpages of Portal:Health and fitness. The problem is that, as far as I can determine, the "selected" articles in this portal in the subjects of fitness, nutrition, and biochemistry were chosen in January 2006, copied from the respective articles Physical fitness, Healthy diet, and Cholesterol as they were at that time, and have not been significantly updated or replaced since then. That is, those three articles have been displayed on the portal for the last 11 years, rather than being rotated with other fitness, nutrition, or biochemistry articles -- and not only that, but they're being displayed with their text from 2006, even though the writing style of at least the former two has improved considerably over the years. None of the three articles is or has ever been a Featured article in terms of quality.

I would like to see these three portal subpages deleted, and then, if there are people interested in maintaining this portal, they can use Template:Random portal component, or a similar method, to select a rotating choice of higher-quality articles to display, instead of keeping the same articles in place for years at a time. Comment – removing the subpages will break the portal, as selected article subpages are a standard feature of portals, and part of their basic structure. Deleting the subpage rather than its content would render this portal without a selected article subpage, that would require a deletion review just to fix. Note that articles can be presented as "selected" without being featured. They were not presented as "selected featured articles". There are two very simple solutions here, and a more involved one. The first simple solution is to update the content in the subpages (a simple copy and paste). The second simple solution would be to choose other articles to showcase in those subpages, and copy and paste excerpts from those in there. A more involved solution would be to install a randomizer with many selected articles, as is done for philosophers at the Portal:Philosophy – the subpage presents a different philosopher each week, automatically, year after year. Deleting the subpages would be overkill. Please don't cripple the portal in trying to fix a basic maintenance issue. Thank you. The Transhumanist 00:13, 1 July 2017 (UTC) reply
Actually, there are at least two different methods of rotating the content on a portal page. As seen at Portal:Philosophy/Selected philosopher, a portal can use a rotation in which the selected content cycles in a specific order from week to week (or month to month). Or a portal can use Template:Random portal component to select different content (chosen from a specific group of articles or pictures) every time the page is loaded. -- Metropolitan90 (talk) 03:23, 1 July 2017 (UTC) reply
By the way, if these pages are deleted, I would not want to foreclose the possibility of them being re-created in a significantly different format where the content is to be rotated or varied rather than remaining the same. If the closing admin wants to specify that re-creation in a significantly different format is specifically allowed, I would be fine with that. -- Metropolitan90 (talk) 06:54, 5 July 2017 (UTC) reply
