Portal:Gravity

Portal:Gravity ( | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

A long-abandoned non-portal on a topic which probably does meet POG.

This one was created [1] back in August 2005‎, just before the portal namespace went live later that month. A you can see at Portal:Gravity, it has about 6 boxes on different topics, plus a DYK box and picture box, plus a short list of key topics. However, as Special:PrefixIndex/Portal:Gravity shows, these are all static; there is no rotation of content. As far as I can see, all the subpages are unchanged since their creation in 2005, apart from minor tweaks. They are basically 14-year-old content forks of the relevant articles, reflecting a very early stage on Wikipedia's coverage of these topics.

So it's not really a portal. It neither offers good navigation nor samplers of a wide range of topics, except for the fact that someone has added Template:Theories of gravitation near the top of the page. Navboxes are usually placed at the bottom of the page, and this one's placement at the top kinda suggests that it is not worth scrolling down to see the rest of the page ... which I'd agree with, because the head article gravity is pretty good The article is a well-written and well-laid out B-class article, large chinks of it well-written in summary-style, with the concepts and other topics expanded in clearly-linked articles.

Per WP:PORTAL, "Portals serve as enhanced 'Main Pages' for specific broad subjects". But in this case, the head article is significantly more enhanced that the portal. The article is better laid out, covers far more topics, has far more samples of deeper content, and has a TOC to help navigation.

When the portal was created in 2005, the head article looked like this [2]. i.e. a 3-para stub. The portal was then clearly a vastly better page. But 14 years later, the unchanged portal is now way outclassed by the head article.

The topic probably could support a portal: Category:Gravitation looks quite rich, but there is no point in keeping this long-abandoned fork of the head article. So I propose that this portal and its subpages be deleted without prejudice to recreating a curated portal, in accordance with whatever criteria the community may have agreed at that time.

Note history: this portal spent most of its life named Portal:Gravitation. On 17 September 2018, @ The Transhumanist created [3] Portal:Gravity as as a drive-by automated template built on Template:{{PAGENAME}}. As with so many other cases, TTH apparently no effort to check for the existence of another portal covering the same topic, so on 14 November 2018 @ Wumbolo wisely redirected [4] the automated portal to Poratal:Gravitation. The page was then speedy deleted on 20 April 2019 to make way for the old manual portal to be moved [5] to the Portal:Gravity by @ JJMC89, matching the head article.
If there is consensus to delete, then I recommend that before deletion, this page should be moved back to Portal:Gravitation, to keep the histories separate. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • ( contribs) 20:02, 5 May 2019 (UTC) reply
